not sure what i did here...other than buy a cheap motor. i was running on 4s in my titan 29with an x445.timimg was set an 3 degrees. what did i do wrong? prolly a little too much prop. plus, i had just ordered some 5s packs to run it... now im gonna need to get a new motor. i haVe seaking 120 esc... so im gonna go with another 3674. im thinking a real leopard, but what kvzzzzzzzz? 1900 or 1700? i dont want to ruin another motor...especially on 5s :help:

Is it a delta wind motor? If not the timing was set too low. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it burning up though. My next guess would be too much prop. Maybe Tacons are just crappy motors. I've never had one. Did you start with a smaller prop?

yeah i had run smaller props without issue. it was a 3.5d wind. kinda bummed. i shoulda just saved the 36 bux and bought the leopard to start. i think im gonna go for the 1700. on 5s that will be decent....

That should run good. I was curious about Tacon motors. I'm not now, though. Sorry for your loss.

1900kv...does that mean it was one of the green motors? The green ones are not the same as the orange ones. The orange ones seem to be leopard copys, and the green ones...well, aren't. That said, I ran a green 1900kv today with a s215 on 4s in my 26" mono and it did well. Everything stayed cool and it seemed to perform ok. There is definitely a power difference between the orange and green ones though.

I will make sure to post if mine ends up the same as yours. Today was the first run so its a bit early to tell.

yes it is indeed the green one keith. what prop did you run? mine did well the first few runs... then the x445 went on. it ran awesome for almost 5 mins... then junked lol. hope you have better luck!

Interesting... I run tacons in all my rigs. 4074 in my lst, 3650 in my slash and they both perform great. Got the 3674 1900kv on the way for my apparition. I think that was too much prop for that motor. I'm going to start with a x440 and slowly progress up depending on temps.

Looking at that magnet it could have been just a bad motor... it happens

I think we are just proving to ourselves that we get what we pay for, I'm just as guilty trying the budget route and it has come back to bite me. Dirt cheap motors, esc batteries, chinese flex shaft, whatever just don't hold up to boating use.
This is kind of ironic, yesterday somebody who posted in this thread took offense at me questioning certain Tacon motors, 12 hours later we have pictures of one that failed!
That sucks Dana, at least you can have a new motor delivered, I'm SOL until this mail strike is over!
Cheap, fast or reliable- choose two!

i choose fast and reliable from now on. i know leopards are good, ill stick with em

When you ran with the x445 prop did you take any temp readings?

dana
06-27-2011, 11:54 AM
No, I can tell you the batteries and esc and connectors were all just warm. No concern. I knew at the endbell the motor was getting hot. I had been running a tfl x444 was the same really. Sorry my temp gun needs a new battery, usually I do temp readings

The x445 should not have been an issue in my opinion. I run the M445 on my spec boats (granted, the M445 is somewhat detongued) with SV27 and UL-1 motors on 4S and they like it just fine.

I think you just got a bad motor. Another one like it may be just fine. I've had one NEU motor fail too. It's the price we pay for trying to milk that last little mph out of our stuff. I do know that NEU motors RARELY fail but you definitely pay a hefty price for them. Can't blame anyone for trying to get by for less. Several guys at our club are running the leopards and seem to be having very good luck with them.

Yeah I guess it could be just a bad motor. Either way I ordered a leopard 1700kv and two 5s packs. I feel more confident this will get me where I want to be, reliably. I'll start with 440/3 or x442

That sucks, would have been nice to know if the motor just failed or over heated.

I got that same motor on the way so ill see how it runs, on 4s with a 1.14x42 prop.

Hope your new motor works out better for you.

Well I got my leopard from ose today. Threw it in and put a x640 on there to start. Ran great and motor was very cool. Compared to the tacon which got very hot on any prop I ran. Thanx leopard.... Gonna try some different props then try 5s.... Nice

I think you had a bad motor... i just ran the tacon 3674 1900kv in my apparition yesterday, ran great. After 5 min of moderate throttle the motor was only at 105. Was running on 4s with a 42mm prop. I will push it harder later this week and see how temps are.

Hmmm.... Sucks for me I guess. Is yours the orange or green can? What timing are you using?

penz
07-07-2011, 07:43 PM
Green can, they don't make a 3674 1900kv in the orange can. I believe my timing is at 30, thats if the menu tree for my esc is correct. According to the esc instructions timing of 1 is for high kv motors, you were running 3, that could have been an issue... But you have no temp data so we will never know... illupdate how mine does under hard throttle.

Just wanted to chime in here too. I run an orange Tacon 3674 1300kv on 6s in my mean machine and it moves really well with a x642. I have yet to GPS it but its faster than my 32 Fighter Cat single which hit 45.3mph with a Castle 1512 1800kv on 4s. Temps are all around 90-100 degrees after a 4 minute (mostly full out) run in the Mean Machine, timing is set at 15. I like the Tacons as they have treated me well for the rock bottom price. Was thinking of putting the 1700 or 1900kv into the new Mystic and see how she goes.

I just had another good run with this motor, temp at 105... Im going to eventually put on a bigger prop.

Here is another thread about other users thoughts on tacon motors.

http://www.rctech.net/forum/micro-mini-scales/526470-warning-hobbypartz-tacon-mini-motors.html

This thread sounds like an esc problem, but i believe you just got a bad motor, and it can and has happened to any brand...
