How does one mount a water-jacketed motor in an Aquacraft Rio EP?

I neglected the 10-minute cool-down advice from Aquacraft @ http://www.aquacraftmodels.com/techsupport/aqub1800tech.html , and fried my stock ESC (fatal failure during run).

I am going to upgrade my Rio (http://www.hobzob.com/vehicles/view/p/rc/v/3574/i/rio ) to a low Kv brushless motor on a 60A ESC, just enough to drive that surface-piercing prop to put the Rio up on plane quickly, and get some long run times without any timeouts except to swap batteries. I plan to put a second water pickup to cool the ESC independently from the motor...but more about that in other postings, this thread is about how do you mount a brushless motor with a water jacket on in the Rio EP?

The stock Rio EP motor mount is a clamp about an inch/2.5cm wide: see attached photo from http://www.aquacraftmodels.com/boats/aqub1800-rio-ep/aqub1800ai01l-lg.jpg, which excludes any water-jacket for the width of the clamp. Water-jackets generally cover most the the length of the brushless motor, which doe not leave much to clamp (target motor is the GForce BL3650 Water-Cooled Brushless Boat Motor 2300KV (540L) from Value Hobby, but that motor only has 1.5cm of 'freeboard' outside of its integrated water jacket). The after-market mounts I see online appear to be for fiberglass boats.

I think the old cooler will fit better in the clamp, There was two sizes 45mm long and 55mm long x 36mm,

Thank you for the photo of your motor mount: it looks like cutting one of the two straps off of the stock motor mount leaves one strap, and that is enough to hold a brushless motor in place. I understand that the cooling jacket allows water to come in direct contact with the motor and flow around it.

Have you had any issues with the motor slipping inside the cooler, or water leaking from the jacket? How good a fit is that 40mm? Was it a problem getting it to clamp in any way, or have you seen any cracking of the mount?

I see that they have discontinued the old jacket per http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-mjacket which measured approx. 45mm long x 40mm OD x 36mm ID

And they replaced it with the other jacket you sent, found at http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-80035, which measures
45mm long x 43mm OD x 36mm ID

The stock Rio motor is 57mm long x 37mm diameter, so I understand that the 43mm OD of the new jacket is not as good a fit as the 40mm OD of the old. I did not realize 40mm would fit...but 43mm seems too large for the mount.

Thanks again for the photo and also for the details on the cooling jacket dimensions. I have a much better idea of how to upgrade my Rio EP now. And that the 44mm jacket of the motor I was going to use would not mount under that strap any better than the new cooling jacket from OSE.

How fast do you want to go ? 2S speeds or 3S nuts.
Stock mount with clamp and inner tube rubber holds motor good.

That's a professional-looking motor mount you have there, thanks for the photo. How did you remove the stock mount? Does it peel off with a little help from an exacto or flat-edge screwdriver? And how did you secure that motor mount? It looks like the same epoxy & technique used for fiberglass, but I thought that would eat the plastic or crack the hull.

Meanwhile, thank you very much for the inner-tube rubber idea...I have some rubber from cut-up galoshes that will fill that bill nicely.

I am not looking for speed as much as unlimited run time up on plane with all the battery swaps I want...at least three, and ideally not less than five 3000 mAh batteries worth. I have a SeaKing 60A ESC on the way to drive the motor, and i'd like to think that will operate with a lot of headroom (unlike the stock ESC, which I toasted...just as we were bringing it in from its first long run on a little bit of RC Boating Heaven on Cameron Run in VA).

So to use the stock mount I think I need a water-jacket with an OD of 37mm-40mm and a [small] motor that fits in that jacket. Or, I need a long motor that sits in the stock clamp with enough motor outside the mount for the water-jacket. Or, I need to up my game and do a custom mount like yours, so if you can spare the time please do link me to/send more how-to descrip/photos of your Rio brushless mount. I see you removed the stock receiver/servo/ESC box...have the receiver or servo gotten wet yet?
