15"Offshore Warrior mono further mods+ short run

Further to previous mods & runs using my usual $12 450 outrunner & $20esc,Im now using an Octura x632 detongued & cupped at tips on 3s 60c-80c lipo. I have been using for the last 8 months cheapo Chinese .098 flexes to which i do run an awefull lot of times,Only had 1 break + a couple that ended with a slight snake so to speek at the coupling end between the coupling & stuffing tube. But this was with hundreds of runs during that time also putting a lot of strain on them with the boat going in at wot a lot of times along with the prop hitting the bottom of the lake bending blades but still never broke a flex during this. So decided id try the Octura .098 flexes, The Octura certainly felt a lot more flexy & plyable to the point that the cheapo ones would stay nearly straight if you held at one end horizontally where as the Octura would bend down under it own weight a couple of inches.I didnt feel comfortable with the feel of these shafts but thought its an Octura so it must be better.Sheared the flex on the first day with just over 2 batteries of running time (2200mah). Now going to rip everything out & go to .130 flexes, Not sure if theyll be Octura though. This is the run the shaft let go on. Martin.

Sweet! The .130 should hold up nicely. It was just a little too much for the .098 methinks.

Yes .098" is pushing things, Having said that i only had 1 flex break in hundreds of runs & that was cheapo Chinese ones that took massive amounts of stick. I was a bit surprised how easy the Octura one failed. The original flexes were only 090" with 3mm stub shaft running in ball races so i went to the Octura.098" that also had a slightly bigger stub shaft at 1/8" & also went to 1/8" ball races. Having seen how easy this particular flex failed im wondering how strong the Octura 130" ones are as their only .032" thicker. Im not sure whether the Octura flexes are wound differently to some other flexes as they deffinetally fell very plyable indeed, The diameter of the individual strands of wire their wound from is the same diameter as the other makes that i have though. Have been running the larger .130" flex now a number of times & am really pleased with the results over the .098".Thought id also make a new strut to try the floating bush design (Speedmaster type bushing that floats & turns ) over my normal ball bearing ones. This type of design on small high reving boats (42000 rpm unloaded) is deff not as fast as my ball bearing struts.When i hit the throttle on the ball bearing ones the boat is much more aggresive & excelleration is much faster with the boat riding on the prop & very little of the hull in the water. Wot the boat is faster also.I done this trial before deciding whether to run ball bearing design in my Mini Sprint hydro or run it stock. Will deff be using ball bearings.The other design is simple & cheap to make but simply not as fast on my boats. Martin.

I know nothing personally about the Gecko other than seeing several vids of them running & the ones i saw seem to bob up & down & jump quite a lot, Maybe they wernt set up right i dont know. Re the Warrior hull, Its a very fast hull that dosnt have many bad habits at all & you can push the speeds on them quite high. The Gecko is deff better made & stronger, If your looking for high speeds you deff wont a hull that runs stable & straight.

I have a Gecko, it is a really really nice hull and is very durable. Martin your right, almost all the vids of the Gecko seem to be bouncy, they weren't set up right. I got mine to stay planted and hit 46mph on the radar gun. Setting it up was the hardest part.

I have an ammo 28-35 3900kv in-runner, Seaking 35amp esc, 11.1v 2200 Skylipo 30c/60c burst, stock Octura x427 with no mods, motor and esc are water cooled as well. OSE mini strut and rudder, .098 flex from Octura, with a number ose-80100 motor mount. It self rights too. This setup has hit 114F on the motor and 116F ish on the esc. I think it has hit thermal shutdown twice, since then I have put the Dimension Engineering Sport Bec in an haven't had a problem. I have to say I am surprised it holds up. :thumbup: Big waves are fun!

I have 2 Gecko's and both running smooth. One has the stock drive line that I straightened out by raising up the prop to be level with the hull bottom then lowered the motor as much as possible. My 2nd, I changed to a .098 Octura flex and looks to be even smoother. I'm running Neu motors, 1105-3Y and orig on 9.6V Nimh's. On 2S they're a little slower so might bump up to the 2.5Y or 4.5D.

Any recommendations for a good 2S motor? I really like the Neu's.

I have one of the offshore woriers it's totally stock and on 3s it flys!
I am waiting for the drive shaft to fail.... what is needed to put in a better unit?
somebody sell a easy drop in replacement cable set up?

You may find 4400kv on 3s to much on an outrunner,You will also find problems with the mount not clearing the collar on the motor shaft. When using 28mm diam outrunner as i do you have to really secure the lipo as its very close to the revolving body of the motor ecsecialy going with higher c lipos as their that much bigger in size & sit close to the motor. Dont try using stock esc with any upgrades . Martin.

I am at the moment using a Mystery 2836-3800kv motor that i get from HK on Ebay. As for more speed motors are limited as to what you can get in the boat, Wait untill you try getting bigger motors in along with much larger esc & larger size lipos & youll realise how tight things are. Re going faster with the Warrior hull, Believe you me you will certainly need to strengthen the hull & hatch fitting in every area to withstand the impacts youll get. Ive practically destroyed the hull due to impacts & constant repairs. Martin.

I would say once you start getting to mid 40s mph you will need to fit trim tabs, The boat runs much better with them as speeds increase. Also check the rear 3" of the hull bottom for any hook ( concave curve ) as this sticks the hull to the water if the bottom is not flat in this area & slows the boat. Just use a ruler or something straight sat on the hull to see if theirs a hollow & fill if nesessary to get it flat. Mine did have a hook & filled it. Martin.

What do you suggest to fill and straighten the bottom of the hulls? I'm looking for something that's workable on these little hulls.

Auto body filler, Use the ones that are easy to sand & sand with a flat block of wood with the wet & dry wrapped around the block of wood so you get a nice flat surface & keep checking with a straight edge as you sand. If you still have slight hollows after sanding just put another layer of filler where needed & finish sanding. Martin.

I am also looking to upgrade the drive line on the warrior.

I noticed you used the OSE mini strut and rudder kit (oct-oc4str-cda?). With this rudder, does it handle any differently from stock? How do you find this strut and rudder setup? Are you using the teflon liner?

I am going to stay with the stock motor for now, what props would be a good choice?

You might want to try a 062 wire drive on those. What is the prop shaft size? I can also make smaller dia couplers for them.

When you fit an outrunner motor in the Warrior you have to make sure the battery is secured well as it is very close indeed to the spinning can of the motor. If the battery is allowed to move it will touch the can & ruin the battery by cutting into it.

Are you going to use 2s or 3s as 3800kv on 3s is a hot set up & should only be used for short speed runs as its doing 42000rpm unloaded. I would use a watercooled esc at these speeds as things get quite hot.

I dont have any pics but the trim tabs are the ones in OSE store ose80069 for $7.95, I cut them smaller to 25mm wide x 30mm length.

The inside edge of each tab is 12- 13mm from the centre of the hull so around 25 - 26mm between the 2 inner edges of the tabs. Their also around 1.5mm up from the bottom of the hull ( dont set them level with the bottom of the hull ).
