Hello all, I join the ranks of the upgraders...My spartan, first time out on 6S locked up the motor. Traxxas told me to send in the Motor and Speedo. And I don't want to wait forever for my replacements.

CC 1717 motor. OSE water jacket for the 1717
Seaking or Turnigy 180A Speedo.
Upgraded cooling lines.
I'll start with the OE prop.

I have the Traxxas moded rudder with the larger inlet.

I'm I going in the right direction?

Thanks for your input.

Erick

I would say you are basically headed in the right direction.

Not 100% certain about the castle 1717 (I'm assuming 1580kv) , nothing wrong with Castle Motors, just can't help wonder if the motor is a bit of overkill for the Spartan.

It is a big, heavy, torque monster of a motor to have hanging off the end of a plastic motor mount with no tail ring support.

But, to the best of my knowledge no one has tried one yet, so maybe it will work fine.

First, find the nearest dumpster, place boat inside, then walk away. Your upgrades should make a reliable setup. I think most use a 1520.

Here is a very good alternative

1520's are beginning to get hard to find. The Leopard 4082 1600kv will run great in that boat. Ignore the 8s max thing. It's not a voltage rating for boats. I have one on the way for my DF 33.

The CC 1520 has been discontinued. I tried to get one last week. Called Castle and they confirmed they are discontinued. They suggested the 1515, so that's what I got. 2200kv. You will hear a lot of people say that is too much for this hull. But I've heard from a number of people that have been running them for a while without any issues, even with the stock drive shaft. That 1717 is a monster, and I don't even know if that would fit in there without changing the motor mount. The 1515 will fit right in. My LHS ordered one for me and it was in within 2 days. I got everything else from OSE, cooling jacket and ESC.

A lot of people are also going with the Leopard 4082's, 1600kv, but those are getting hard to find too. KershawDesigns had some, my buddy just got one last week. But most other places were sold out.
