View Full Version : Darin's Wild Thing 32" P-Mono Build

Well... Time to build a P-Mono...

I've begun modifying this 32" wooden Wild Thing that I purchased on E-Bay. It's made of fairly rigid ply, and was destined to be a Nitro boat before I rescued it... ;)

I did some trimming to the radio box to open things up and have the motor now mounted... When I get a proper hatch for it..., I'll trim the opening out to a shape appropiate for the hatch...

Next step is going to be to drill up the transom to mount the hardware so I can locate the stuffing tube assembly, which is going to be a flooded shaft variety, leading to a SpeedMaster Stinger setup...

More to come...

Darin, what is the weight of the bare hull and what power scheme are you looking at? Very nice motor mount and it looks like a Neu
Thanks,

Hey Guys,

Made some progress and thought I'd post some pics... Should be ready for testing on Saturday!

Here are the first of a series of shots, starting with the fitting of the hatch:

After a LOT of sanding and shaping... final painting is now complete. Hardware and support systems will get installed tomorrow... hopefully for some testing/racing on Saturday!

Looks great. Where can I find a rail-mount motor mount?

Darin Jordan

The set in the boat are kind of a one-off prototype I got from Brian Buaas...

I don't see anything like this on OSE.com... but Paul Pachmayer of FastElectricRC has them for various motor sizes: http://www.buyfastelectricrc.com/

I got another mount from him and they are really nice... have ESC mount, etc...

Good job saving it from gas. Wouldn't want that hull to go to waste!

Also I have to ask, why are most of your boats painted in Oberto paint scheme? What's the connection?

Because I only have to keep three colors on hand that way... ;)

No connection (though I'm working on it... :D)... Just like the Oberto, like the colors... and this way, i only have to keep three colors on hand...

Nope... I'm just a big GEEK who likes things to be somewhat uniform... And I like the color combo... easy on the eyes, and also easy to distinquish on the water... ;)

OK Guys... Got it all assembled... Just have to plug in the RX tomorrow and then do all the final initial adjustments to everything...

With it sitting just like you see it here, it balances at 9.5" from the transom... Just shy of 30%... I can move the packs forward at least an inch, which moves the CG the same amount... One of the nice things about centering the heavy stuff about on the CG!

As long as things don't go up in smoke tomorrow evening on the bench, she'll get wet on Saturday!

Just weighed this thing... DANG... 8lbs 13oz RTR (that includes the optional 1500mah NiMH RX 5-cell pack, which is 5oz)....

We'll have to see how the 1521 1.5D does in there at that weight...

As usuall Darin most excellent work. How involved is the process of alining and matching the spray rails and strakes? Am I corect in assuming they have to be dead on for proper handeling?

LOT's of sanding and measureing and filling and sanding and measureing and filling and sanding....

I'm not sure how "exact" these are... Because of the way I did them, they were bound to come out about the same size...

I'm not sure how much they come into play while going straight... I DO know that I experimented once on my 26" DH Mono with asymetrical strakes by making one side longer than the other... the boat cornered great, but would NOT drive straight... Cut them even again and everything was fine...

Did I mention to you that it takes a LOT of sanding and measureing and filling and sanding and measureing and fillings and .... :cursing:

I'd much rather have had a boat with strakes already on it! :glare:

How did this gorgeous boat go on the water ??????

Very well, thanks for asking... I finished out of the points in P-Mono at the Nats, and I don't recall why... I think I flipped one heat... Otherwise, it is PLENTY competitive... I just need to drive better...

In P-Offshore, I finished 3rd overall...

I also set the fastest 2-lap (2-laps on the 1/6th) time of the weekend... But I believe that another day of good weather (no wind) would have seen that time fall further... I know I could have gone much faster with a couple of tweaks and more confidence in the boat...

But hey... it was only it's 3rd time in the water, so overall, I'm incredibly PLEASED!! So much so that I'm going to be selling the 33" Delta Force Hull I have, which is undrilled and already carbon-reinforced, because I like the Wild Thing so much! Mine is fast and handles VERY well...

Well is your battery packs 2-3-s or 2-2s in series or parallel? your boat looks real nice and very detailed. Did you paint it your self?

The packs are TWO 4S in parallel... 4S2P 4500 Elite 30C.

I did paint it myself. Thank you for the kind words...

Well did you video it yet? I want to see, and I do not think you drive that bad if you took third, look at my blog and see how bad I drive, But my boat goes pretty fast, I think I am going to step down to the 4s like you I am currently running 2 3s packs in series, with a feigao 11XL, and I made my own motor mount out of aluminum plate. follow the link off my avatar.

Hi Ed from France
Nice job on your hardware!!

ED66677
07-23-2008, 09:47 AM
thanks Peter! It a kind of new approach I'm testing here, nothing exceptionnal just two rigid shaft, one in the stinger, on in the motor bell, and a little piece of 4mm flex between, so no issue with teflon tubing and leakage, the piece of flex is outside of the hull, in the water! certainly heavier than a standard flex drive but I planning to make a new plastic light weigh one.

Beautiful !
The hardware you are running puts the prop several inches behind the transom( there must be a reason for that) then you put 4 trim tabs on the transom. in effect moving the transom back an inch or so, which moves the prop closer to the transom. Why not just put the prop an inch closer to the transom to begin with?

The short answer is:

Tabs adjust... transoms don't... ;)

Works so far! :D

I wanted to have the prop 10 to 12% away from the transom but as this trans is a prototype, I kept the prop shaft long enough according to the hull I would install it on, originally I wanted a DF33" and finally end up with a 29"!
It will be shortened as well as the rudder arm soon.

I am sure that with 4 trim tabs you can really dial that wild thing in......Right? Did you make your own battery packs from cheapbatterypacks.com? or dd you buy them already assembled?
