Just did my first run on 5s, so awesome. Running stock esc and about half way through took the cover off and there was smoke hovering around back by the transom. Everything still worked so I continued to run until batteries ran out and again when I checked there was smoke. It looked like it was coming from those black things on the esc. Resistors? Can I just continue running until it doesnt work anymore or could it damage batteries?

Do you have pics of your ESC? Maybe we can help.

Don't have pictures but it doesn't look any different than it did to start. Blue part of esc not even hot to touch. Resistors were hot but not melted or swollen. Can I just run it till it blows up without risk of ruining anything else?

There capactitors. I would NOT suggest running that way until something blows. If it blows and can take out you motor and possible batts.

Need more information:
* Motor
* Batt specs
* Gap between strurt & drive dog
* Prop
* Any binding
* Where you half throttle a lot
* Run time

Sounds like your setup is overpowering your ESC. Did you disconnect the BEC?

Running stock motor, 1 2s 35c 5000mah and 1 3s 35c 5000mah with 642x, gap between drive dog and strut 1/16" no binding, BEC disabled, ran at 1/2 throttle one way into the wind full throttle coming back with the wind equal distances. Ran about 6-8mins i think. Also 1 stop in the middle when i first saw smoke. It was really fast and fun smoke didnt seem to affect the way it ran?

Hmmm... very interesting... were the conditions rough? My only thought could be youre overworking the esc... 6-8 min run is a tad on the long side. Were both the batteries new or equal in use?

First run on the 3s pack about 20th run on 2s. Conditions were almost glass to small chop going into the wind all small chop going with the wind.

I just have to say guys..Dont run this esc on 5s..I did over prop mine on 5s a bit but there were guys on here using the same prop and setup on 5s that I was and never let the smoke out..Try to run it on 4s and see if the problem persists..If it dosent smoke then, your just gonna have to break down and get a sk180 or sf120 to run on 5s..I just wouldnt risk it any further..If you spend 100$ on a new esc, its better than risking possibly $300+ on an entirely new electric system including batteries if you let it blow..
Just my 2 cents..:Peace_Sign:

Thanks for all the input. Was just gonna let it blow because I have a Turnigy 180amp on the way. If it will ruin other things guess I'll run 4s til it gets here. Thanks again.

Yes it does stink. Very familiar with that smell from my spartan.

i have run mine only on 4 cell and have taken off the tupperware lid after a run and saw wisps of what looked like smoke but i beleave it was just warm air in the hull and the cool moist air outside mixing together......i thought that might be what u saw till it hit me u were running 5 cell

Nothing has changed with the newer 45A ESCs... you guys are just pushing them a lot harder! Boat is bigger than the old BJ26, and they are just being run harder. ESC was NOT designed to run on 5S, so this type of thing is done at your own risk. What worked on the BJ26 will not necessarily work on the MG.

It's a RTR... it's designed to be upgraded! ;) Get one of the 120A ESCs mentioned above and then go nuts.

That being said... I've pushed the 45A ESCs to nearly 90A continous and they've held up for years... I know where they grow, however, so it's easier for me to stomach doing that and assume the risk. ;)

Ummmm.... what exactly do you mean by 4S2P?? If you are talking a 4S pack per side... that's 8S1P, and it WILL "poof" if you do that...

Ask me how I know that as well... ;)

no 2 packs of 2 cells like it sposed to have

Well... be clear then... that is 4S1P, and it should have been covered under warrantee...

One bad part doesn't make the product bad. In general, these are pretty stout ESCs for their rating.

hey just replying to the thread about new esc seeming to blow easyer take it for what its worth....maybe u should check if they changed any parts before u say no parts changed

Let's see... it's a blue box, all sealed up in hard, black, goo, by a bunch of people many thousands of miles on the other side of the world, who don't generally speak English...

And they DIDN'T inform me that they might have changed any parts?? I'm shocked! :doh:

Hahaha... just bustin' your chops, Ron... but, again... you are going to get a bad part once in awhile. I don't think it's fair to start making a pattern of failure because one part failed.

If they DID change any parts... even the ProBoat engineers wouldn't likely know about it... I can tell you for certain that there were no parts changes ASKED for, or authorized.

Glad the replacement part is working fine. :cool2:

I had thought it may have been steam as mentioned earlier as it was hot inside the hull and very humid and cold outside and the fact that it didn't seem to affect performance. I've just never had experience with an esc steaming.
