Does anyone have any good measurements on the Traxxas Shaft? Reason I ask is I have a customer that lost his and traxxas is out of stock. I want to make some replacements.

I need the following?

Shaft diameter?
Shaft length?
Cable thickness?
Cable length?
Length(total) from End of Cable to tip of prop shaft?

I've posted it in here. Ill find them and post.

Total length of flex and stub shaft all together 15 ¼”
Length from end (where collet goes) of the flex to start of the stub is 11 ½” And the flex is .150 diameter
Stub is 3 ¾” long total
From where the flex goes in & stub begins the shaft diameter of the stub is .195 for a length 2.60” then it recesses down to .187 diameter for a length of .700” then the rest is threads for .400”.
Also the end of the flex where the collet goes is soldered.

does that help?

They have an oddball prop shaft size the goes through the strut bushing. it sucks

would be good to offer a new strut to go with the new shaft?

If you build them, they will come. Especially if they are upgraded flex cable.

You can count me in for two.

Brushless makes a good point.

Because of the odd ball sizing on the prop shaft, another option to consider is offering a new 3/16" strut assembly that will bolt on without modifications (easy for the less experienced), then any upgraded flex shaft that is long enough and with standard 3/16" prop shaft could be used.

Also, the quality of the Teflon liner is suspect. Could be a dollar to made on good quality stuffing tube liners as well.

Just illustrating to concur with JPriami

My guess is that the stub is 5mm to allow the use of standard ball bearings for the strut that has never materialized.

Very possible, .195" is 4.953mm

I have had several want to put wire drives in. I have the stock to do it as well.

Please have the flex cable upgraded for the spartan...
There is quite a number of guys playing the spartan here in singapore...
I am sure the respond will be great...

Is that step down for 3/16" props or 4mm props?

JPriami

It's for 3/16 props Jeff.

Cool... nice they run a 5mm shaft. It would also be easy to do 187 cables.

Does anyone mind grinding their own flat for the dog? Should 187 cable be an option or is 150 enough?

.187 option might be nice for those running upgraded setups with larger props. As long as the stock stuffing tube isn't a problem. I put a .187 aeromarine cable in mine and it felt ok dry spinning.
Might need a new collet for the .187 cable? I didn't test fit that. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get a better collet anyways. The stock one is pretty light duty.

.187 would be good LMK when they are available ? I`m going to try CC 1717 on my Spartan . :popcorn2:

These are ready to go...just got the 5mm stock. I did not see them on OSE yet but I am sure he is getting some made. These will be brazed like the Hughey shafts. 150 and 187 size. They are factory specs.

Jeff does the 187 size fit in the stock stuffing tube , strut ?

Just scooped 2 of them.

I went with the .150 to match stock size.

Did not see it at the ose web shop.

OSE doesn't have them yet, Jeff does.

Not sure. The .187 shaft is nearly 1mm larger diameter. I think you would need to either remove the teflon liner, or replace the stuffing tube and liner with a larger diameter setup.

This is just a guess, but it is why I went with stock sizing. I'm thinking a better quality cable should do the trick without going larger.

But I'm not looking to run extreme prop sizes and try to break speed records.

Hi Kevin,
Will the upgraded shaft solve the shaft overheating problem ?
The reason why the shaft overheat is due to the traxxas crap quality shaft ?
I have the same problem...should we go bigger on the flex shaft or remain the same ??

I really don't have the experience to answer that question.

I don't know that anyone knows for certain what is causing some spartan stuffing tubes to heat up, but I think the general theory is that the shaft is low quality and is "corkscrewing" inside the stuffing tube causing friction.

A high quality flex shaft should minimize the corkscrew effect, so I'm banking on a good quality flex shaft working for my setup.

I'm guessing Jeff is offering the larger flex shaft size for fellows like JPriami (or Brushless55 if he ever drops that CC1717 into his Spartan, hint hint, poke poke) that plan to push the hull to it's limits by running large, hi torque motors, and large props.

Those setups will place extra demand on the drive line.

Hopefully some of the more experienced boaters will drop in and give us the straight goods.

Kevin

EDIT: and keep in mind, if you go to the larger cable size, you will need to replace your collet as well.

Ok.. Actually worth the try... But if use the .187 I don't think can use the Teflon inner liner...

In case you missed my EDIT. Be sure to order a new collet at the same time.

If it were me and running any bigger power like 6S I WOULD remove the teflon and use a good marine grease on the cable and stub...I also like to grease and then put a few drops of regular 3n1 oil down them and the stub...makes it very slick. Not sure if OSEs are loctite or brazed versions but thought I would just go brazed since most want to run bigger motors and 6S. Yes, they are more time since they step and have to be threaded.

Hi jeff,
What do you mean by brazed ?
Do you have the brazed flex shaft for the .187 ?

Brazed is just that...not soldered. 30,000 psi tensil strength. 1200 degrees with a brazing rod. It is 56% silver that I use.
