The Rio Grande Racers of El Paso, Texas are pleased to announce that they will host the "1st Annual West Texas Shootout for Autism Awareness" on April 30 - May 1, 2011. When the club was re-formed earlier this year, we decided to team up with the Autism Society of El Paso. Our race was originally scheduled for June 25-26, but the San Antonio, Texas group was faced with drought conditions and had to cancel their race. April happens to be Autism Awareness Month and we decided to step up and host our race that weekend. The Autism Society will also be hosting their 3rd Annual Walk/Run Event for Autism Awareness that same weekend and location as our event. We were just getting started on planning for our June race, so taking this date with short notice definitely presents some challenges.

The race will take place at Ascarate Lake in El Paso, Texas.

Open water will be available on Friday, April 29th from 9:00am until 6:00pm.

Open water will not be available morning of races, but will be allowed after races if time allows.

Lunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday for all racers and their families.

Group dinner will be held Saturday night at 7:30pm at Pelican's Restaurant.

Race Procedures and Format:

This race will run under the normal NAMBA District 7 race rules and awards format.

Prior to the start of races, racers will be asked to designate Two High Point classes that they have entered. The racer with the highest score from those two classes will earn the High Point Award.

The racer showing a display of excellence over the weekend will also be awarded with the "Eli Karagich Award for Excellence". This will be an award in which your engraved name plate will be added. A picture of the winner and trophy will be taken. Framed picture will be sent to winner. The trophy will remain with the Rio Grande Racers.

The Shootout format is as follows:

* After the 4 rounds of racing is complete, the top 4 in points in the designated shootout classes will automatically qualify for the shootout.

* 5th through 10th in points will be eligible to run in a last chance qualifier race. The race will require a $5 donation to the Autism Society in order to participate.

* Top 2 finishers from last chance qualifier will be placed into the Shootout Final.

* Shootout Winner will take home a 1st Place Trophy

More Information:

Some may be concerned with the violence in our sister city Juarez, Mexico. The violence is taking place in Juarez and not El Paso. El Paso has recently hosted the Hyundai Sun Bowl between the University of Miami and Notre Dame. 50,000+ fans and their families visited the city with no problems what so ever. Please come visit our city and experience the great food, great sites and wonderful hospitality.

The Autism Society of El Paso will be hosting its 3rd Annual Walk/Run for Autism Awareness on Saturday, April 30th. The Rio Grande Racers encourage the racers families and friends to participate in this event if they are interested.
