View Full Version : Stock Spartan Prop?

Sorry if this has been answered
The stock prop is 42mm dia. x 59mm pitch.
The Prather 215 @ 40.6mmx63.5mm is a good first step up
The Prather 220 @ 43.7mmx66mm would be a good next step, but personally I think you may have problems with this prop on stock set up. This prop should get you close to the claimed 50 mph mark.

I am guess that whatever prop I use to watch temps? By going up to a Prather220 can esc and motor handle it? Are there signs that its too much? Higher temps? If my temps are ok on another prop does that mean im good or can it still blow the esc even with low temps. I want to try an Octurax645 and a Prather 220 but I dont want to blow another ESC. I saw a video with JPriami getting 48-49mph on a Prather 220 with it looked like the batteries all the way to the rear. Mine seems to wobble too much with batteries in the rear.

Hi Shaun,

I'm being very cautious, maybe over cautious, recommending larger props on the stock setup because of the already known issues of overheating motors and torched ESC's.

If the stock components are stretched running the stock prop, I just want to be cautious advising larger props that place more load on the system.

But, watching temps, and if possible monitoring AMP draw after any modification is good practice IMO.

There are many other factors, strut adjustment, trim tab adjustment, battery placement, even water conditions, that can affect the amp load on the system.

So one person may run a particular prop with no issues, another person may try it and overload the system and fry something, depending on all aspects of their setup.

I can't remember everyone's setup, but if you are running stock, I think you will have no problems on the Prather 215, but probably won't see significant performance increase either. maybe a bit from the extra pitch, and a bit because the metal prop won't flex like the stock prop.

The Prather 220 might be OK, but I would recommend keeping a close eye on temps, checking them 2-3 times for the first few runs.

IMO the X645 at 45mm x 72mm is way too much prop for the stock components. You are just asking for trouble.

The Spartan owners manual recommends not going larger than 42mm and 1.4 pitch ratio, which is what the stock prop is. So the question is; is Traxxas just being cautious, or do they know the stock components are close to maxed out even on the stock prop???

Trial and error and playing with the setup on the boat are the only sure way to know. Make minor changes and work your way up, and yes, monitor temps and performance along the way.

Kevin

I thought the x645 was 42mm x67mm? If not, that is the one i was thinking of trying. I am skeptical because of the issues also but I want 50mph out of this think. Not quite ready to upgrade yet. (not sure what i want)

It's the x642 (my mistake)

How much more load will the x642 or P220 put on the motor and ESC?

Not enough to keep up shaun :-) just try the extra 220 I got and see how it does you should be able to tell after a few passes if its gonna be to much or just right... besides your gonna need the extra mph's after I get my batteries

Not true!!!! 4s vs 4s ill take you all day long. Your boat barely has enough power to get out of its own way on 4s.... so yeah I might be upgraded but I'm still using almost 7vlts less than you

no my boat is made for 6s not 4s so u cant say 4s to 4s. max your stock setup whatever it is (maybe 5s) Ill still beat you.

Ill run 5s now and for fun ill run 6s but that's how I roll now in keeping it stock now its all about adjustments.. we ll see how she does on 4s then 5s then 6s... that would be like running a 4cy vs a v8 stock vs stock

not true man...
the MG is a 4s boat and so is the spartan
you can run the traxxas on 4s 5s and 6s
so run your spartan on 4s vs the MG on 4s and watch who comes out the winner :rockon2:
MG BABY!

I think others on here and over at traxxas have said try it and see how it runs, you really will not know till you try one

and try one running 4s for a fair run against the 4s MG! :Peace_Sign:

In his defense won't be to fair since I'm not even close to stock... but I will be on only 4s for now then ill try 5s then 6s and then it won't be fair
