View Full Version : 17" Hydro Looking for recommendations

I am getting this hull from hydrojerry & will need to get all new hardware & motor for it.
It's a 17" ABS hull

Need recommendations on running 2s higher Kv or 3s Lower Kv motors.
I'd like to keep the costs down on this as it is just something to play with.

Figured I could run hobbywing 35amp esc
Motor TBD possibly 4800kv (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8595)
Strut Micro (http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-80046)
Rudder Micro (http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-80048)
Or was thinking maybe a 21 size rudder might be better? A little more length??
Mini Servo
Props TBD on motor choice

Tips Advice greatly appreciated!!
This is my first electric build other then my 1/10 scale thunderboat which I am in the process of scratch building.

:cool:I've had good luck with the hk motors in 450 size heli's and just ordered 3 more to play with in my mini hydros.

This esc has worked for me and I proved it was waterproof as well.

I have one in my 17.5 hydro and ordered 3 more. Someone more experienced than me will have to help you with running hardware. I make my own or make guessestimates. Go big and trim it down till it works. Best of luck to ya

I have some Minicat hydro parts, strut ,rudder, flex shaft etc, I will dig them out and get back to you. If you use these parts, you can always get spares from Sailr.

I think I am going to go with a 12 size rudder just for a little more length.
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-80051

Most likely will need a new standoff to bring it closer to the transom.

I am also debating going with this motor option instead.
3000kv motor http://www.hobbypartz.com/88e-ads-300l-watercool-motor.html

I used to run a 17" hydro with a Feigao 380 8l on 3s.

/QUOTE]

I have seen this video boat seemed to run very well!

I am thinking the 3000kv motor should give me a little more to work with.
Also reading that the 4800 motor shaft tends to bend easily.

I am trying to keep my costs down as much as possible on this build so every little bit counts.

Thinking one of these motors will be a good choice possibly instead of the others
3500kv outrunner
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11178
4400kv outrunner
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11177

I would obviously need to jump the esc up to the 60amp
ot I could even go up to the 90amp esc

Thoughts??

NO WORRIES you HOOKED ME UP!!!!
Nothing a like a little elbow grease.
I'll get it all smoothed out.

I could have taken it down further but figured the primer seemed to stick pretty good so just smooth it out from there.
I'm not sure if I will strip the bottom paint or not, was thinking I will just light sand and give it a coat or two.

Yeah it's a cool little boat.
I think I figured out that I am going to go with the new water cooled 3000kv outrunner
& a 35amp esc.

At the moment I am working on my 1/10 scale so all funds going towards that build.

monojeff

Haven't given up on this build just been busy with work and trying to figure out what motor and esc combo I want to go with.

I am now leaning towards a tacon 2040 motor, it is a bit cheaper and smaller then the outrunner and I have seen others using it in similar sized hulls with good success.

Here is some pics of the boat top deck primed and bottom of boat before getting fresh coat of white.

Can someone tell me if you can run one of the HK Heli 450 out runners without water cooling in a mini if you did not get too wild with the prop?

Yeah I remembered that from your pics and us talking before.
I figured the same thing why not try it out and see what happens.
I have a bunch of small props I can try out.

Did the coils help in cooling it at all you think?
Also what kv was it again 3600???

HYDROJERRY

Think the kv was 4600 or 4800 cant remember for sure,,and i dont think the cooling tube realy helped being the motor has fins..

Well I was starting to paint the hull and the boat fell and cracked the seams open in a bunch of spots.:crying:

I sanded down the seams and applied some fiberglass to all of them so this should make the boat stronger then it was so this doesn't happen again.

Once I am done I can finish painting the hull.
I still need to get a rudder, battery, strut & drive setup.

monojeff
06-25-2011, 08:18 PM
Here is a picture of the boat with new paint job and some decals.

Only things I need now are flex cable and stub shaft and some batteries to get this going.

I plan to do some modification to the transom so make mounting the hardware flatter.
At the moment there is a step right in the middle which makes it weird to mount things so I plan to glue a piece of ply to flatten it out.
I also plan to add some wood to the back of the cowl so it is easier to tape at the moment there is no way to make it waterproof.

In the pics you can see where I added fiberglass on the sides where the seam is to strengthen the joint.
I could probably have done a better job on this part but oh well it's better then CA and opening back up again.
It is rock solid now, not worried about it popping open at the seams anymore.
I didn't care to spend the anymore time to make it perfectly smooth I gave it the "it's good enough".

Ok guys got the rest of the parts to get this boat in the water.

Need to know what prop I should use.
I have a bunch of plastic x and y series 27, 31mm & 34mm
Also have a metal x427 Jerry do you remember if this prop was balanced??
I also have a 30mm glass prop.

The motor I'm using is a 4000kv taxass 380 on 3s.
The battery I'll be using is 1500mah any idea on run time to expect??

HYDROJERRY

Do you remember what prop you were running with this motor in your mini geico?

monojeff
10-10-2011, 02:52 AM
Here is some video I took of the first time running the boat.
Def is a handful at full throttle!
I lost the flext shaft and prop due to not tightening the collet enough you can hear it at the end of the video sounds like someone screaming OOPS!
I really like the way the boat sounds when it's running well suited for the name "Killer Bee"

It's the traxxas motor.
Still needs some adjusting as the water pickup wasn't working.
Was just trying to get the hang of how it would handle.
I think it could use a stronger and faster servo as it's only a T9 and responds slow so gotta be careful on the turns but straight line in pretty fun with it. Can't wait to get it fully dialed little boat def rips.

HYDROJERRY
10-12-2011, 01:40 PM

Specially on 3s.
Gets hot though so need to make sure cooling is working good.
Was way to hot last time an def don't want to burn it up.
I'm planning to start on a mini sprint over the winter and probably power it with this motor.
