Castle 1717 on 7s?

Has anybody tried the 1717 1580kv on 7s? Is it feasible?

the motor says max.45,000 rpm, and castle max 6s but 6s is 35,076rpm at 3.7volt/cell and 39,816rpm at 4.2volt/cellI.
7s is 40,922 at 3.7 and 46,452 at 4.2 volts/cell maybe this the reason they state max 6s?

But when in use the lipos don't have 4.2 volt/cell plus the propeller load which will bring the rpms down.

Or is there another reason, relating to the coil construction which can only handle 6s?

Any ideas?

No doubt the bearings would be fine, not sure about the rotor though. The motor is stated at having a 25.2 volt max input. Even with typical voltage sag at load (3.7 volts per cell) on a 7S pack your at 25.9 volts. At the full 4.2 volts per cell your starting at 29.4 volts. That is considerably more then the 25.2 limit recommended by Castle.

Will it run? I bet it does. Will it survive? That I dont know. One thing I do know is on 7S power you could see very large amp spikes if propped wrong.

I honestly think castle rates all these 1/8 scale motors (I am refering to 1/8 scale off road) at 120A and 6s because that's what their ESC is capable of. They originally sold these to go with their MMM esc as an option motor, and that esc is only 6s capable.
Truth be told, I've ran the 1717-1y on 9s in my 1/7 scale on road car with no problems. :thumbup:
Im sure extended use at this RPM would net a shorter life than lower RPMs, but I dont see a problem with running 7s if its done smart. You would want a good ESC and go easy on the prop. I pulled 200A with a 1520 (1600kv) on 6s driving a s225 prop, so 1580kv on 7s could get out of hand pretty quickly if you over prop it.

Why do you need 7s in a boat? The usable rpms are already there with 1580kv on 6s. Just prop it accordingly and you can max out the motors potential/power....................

That's nice! I will normally run it in a twin cat on 6s but I want to try it on 7s too for 1-2 passes.

for testing, in twin setups propeller choices are quite limited therefore I may need to increase rpm if amps are around 150 on 6s
