View Full Version : ProBoat 1/8 Miss Llumar Build

Doby

I decided to start the build today. Still waiting on the majority of the hardware to show up.

Mounted the rudder bracket with 2 water "pick-up tubes" as well as the water "exit tubes" in the side of the hull.

For the exit tubes, I found two "Aircraft nuts" with plastic inserts and inserted a duplicate set of "pick-up" tubes through the inserts and then inserted the nuts in the pre-existing holes in the hull. With the "exit tubes" aimed to the sky, it should make determining the water flow very easy

Doby, the LLumar looks great!!:thumbup1: What motor and Esc are you planning on??

Doby
12-25-2007, 01:55 PM
Thanks TX;
I love my 1/12 Llumar version and the 1/8 should be even more fun.

As for the motor and speed controller, still a bit "up in the air", The speed controller will probably be one of the new High Voltage Hyrdas, They are good to 50V and come in a few different current ratings, Probably the 180 Amp version. The motor that was suggested by Daren Jordan is this one in the 1.5Y variation;

Thank you for sharing this build Doby. I will enjoy it very much :D. It may even give me some pointers for the Vegas on a smaller scale.

Thanks SJFE, hopefully pointers will flow both ways from all of us here at OSE:w00t: This will be my 4th "noise maker to swiftly silent" makeover.

1) My 1/12 Llumar

Any one know what diffrence the under hull strut is as oposed to the transom mount??? Better, worse trade offs..anything?

Any one know what diffrence the under hull strut is as oposed to the transom mount??? Better, worse trade offs..anything?

on a one 8th scale the strut needs to be mounted under the hull for scale appearance. If its mounted on the back it will be DQ'd.
it is fully adjustable ( in most cased) so there is no real disadvantage other then you need to seal the hole under the hull with caulking

Oh and there is to some extent a prop size limit. . . because it would hit the hull. But still you would need one HUGE wheel to do that

SJFE

Gotach thanks :). I think I am going with the under hull strut. I like the look.

Over the past few years, I have heard quite a bit of negativity regarding ProBoats products. I've now got 3 of their products and other than "self induced" issues, they have held up well and the quality is very good for the price, specifically the metal hardware.

Doby
01-23-2008, 12:08 PM
Thanks for asking,,,I am currently working with RiverRat on a custom motor mount
that will use the stok mounting lugs seen in the photos, it will be adjustable for the motor angle, to help align with the flex shaft, as well as adjustable in a forward/backward manner.

I'm the holdup right now,,,waiting for Steven to get the big Neus in stock so we can finalize the design.

I'm currently adding foam flotation (spray can ) that will make the hull flex free .

Bill-SOCAL

I strongly recommend using a mount that supports the motor both fore and aft.

Doby
02-20-2008, 10:22 AM
I strongly recommend using a mount that supports the motor both fore and aft.

We think alike,,,RiverRat is making a 3 piece mount that will use the existing mounting studs in the stringers, both fore and aft.

Qty 2 "L" shaped brackets for the sides that will be adjustable up and down, and Qty 1 actual motor mount that will hold the motor and mount to the other brackets,,with adjustments fore and aft.

Should help a lot with alignment issues.:bounce:

Doby
02-20-2008, 10:24 AM
I strongly recommend using a mount that supports the motor both fore and aft.

Probably a Hydra HV 180,,,if they ever get released,,or I could always move my Schultze 140/60 back and forth between this and my V-24. But that would be a pain, I would prefer a speed control in each.

I have yet to "formally" race anything (trying to maintain my "amature" status)
I went to London this summer for a weekend of pit crewing for a friend. It was wild,,over 150 boats competing.

Right now we are trying to get legal rights to use a "Overflow pond" in Cambridge
Its perfect, fully accessable all the way around and in the middle of an industrial area by the big Toyota plant. No noise issues either as some guys like to run the smelly/ slimey/ greasy stuff!

Maybe we can get together if the winter ever lets go .

Any updates Doby? :spy:

You are an impatient one , aren't you??

I got the motor mount yesterday and the workmanship from River Rat is first rate!
However, when designing something over the internet there can be interpritation issues ( as well as inadequate drawings from me ).

But hey,,,,we will adapt.

The side rails fit like a glove except the bow slots do not provide enough up and down movement to align the motor with the angle of the shaft. Right now that end is sitting on top of the existing mounting bolts. I will have to moe these mounts up ,,,,not to big of a deal. I love the fact that River threaded the holes on the side rail, no fumbling with hardware from below!

The actual mount is not high enough when mouting the motor the traditional way. The can hits the base and I still have to install the cooling jacket, If it ever gets here. (slight jab at Fine Design).

Now if I flip it around, everything is good....opinions, does anyone think this is a BAD idea, I think it would be fine.

Again thanks to River Rat for some first rate quality harware :bounce:

Doby
03-15-2008, 02:00 PM
SOLUTION FOUND !!!!!

I found the original Motor mounting brackets (for the Zenoah) that were supplied with the hull. Turned them upside down on the existing mounting bolts and PRESTO, the added height lines up the motor shaft to the prop shaft angle perfectly. :bounce:

Drilled a few new hole to line up with River Rats side brackets and the world is perfect again

Hey Doby, this is one I cant wait to see run as well, I am wondering as to what prop you are starting with for tuning and if you have any specs and a link maybe. You are using 1/4" drive I take it? I didnt think OSE carried any that large and wondered if I could start a search soon for one of my own. At least I know who NOT to order it from!!! Hint Hint to FD. Thanks for sharing this build and hope the water loosens up the day after you get er done.

Doby
03-23-2008, 04:56 PM
Thanks Mich;
This has been one very slow thaw.:tongue_smilie:
I am using a 1/4" flex drive. All the hardware is from Horizon Hobby and is the stock ProBoat stuff. The props I'm initally going to use are;

Prop #1 will be from my AQ V-24 that I have lying around. Here is the link :
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMNM9&P=Z

Prop #2 will be a 3 bladed Vodoo prop thats also lying around. Here is the link;
http://www.voodooprops.com/ its a 65X18

I'll start with these and then I'm open to suggestions from everyone:bounce:

Still waiting for my cooling jacket that is apparently on B/O. I really wished I had waited for Steve to get the big Neus in stock and bought everything from him. This will be my last purchase from F/D. If the 180 HV Hydras are not released by the time the ponds thaw, then I'll probably use my Schultze 140/60 in the meantime, I just hate moving speed controlls from one boat to another.

Doby
03-28-2008, 12:33 PM
And the wait for the Hydra and the Cooling jacket goes on.
I did purchase a HV 180 from Castle directly but it will still be a few weeks wait. They were offering 25% off the price untill the end of March so it was to good of a deal to pass up.

As for the cooling jacket,,,,,,,,and FD,,,,,,:frusty:

Picked up some brass tubing to make up for the difference in the prop shaft diameter and the prop hole diameter. Cut them to size and it fits like a glove with no slop.:bounce:

try calling his goofy butt. Or call your cc company and tell em you were ripped.

THEN... order it from STEVEN!!! LOL
Or just dont use one for your first 30 second run. see how it goes. with the cold water you got there it might just be cold enought to wrap silicone tube around the motor a few times. OH OH how I hate the cold.

03-29-2008, 01:19 PM

I cancelled my HV Hydra 180 on Thursday from Castle, they said a few more weeks for delivery. Steve mentioned he had one so I snapped it up, It shipped Friday,,,,so if all goes well, TX's cooling jacket arrives this week , the controller arrives this week,,,,,,then maybe,,,,,,,just maybe it will be in the water next weekend. A lot of things have to happen but its possible! I'm off now to run my SV with the 9XL.

I got my cooling jacket today,,,Woooooooooo Hooooooooooooo!
Although I have to clarify that it was the "Loaner" (yeah,,,right) from TxBoatpilot:usa:. There are some good people here!

The one from FD is still nowhere to be seen:thumbsdown:

So if all goes well, this weekend might be the maiden voyage. If my HV 180 doesn't make it here by Friday, I'll use my Schultze. The weather forecast is 50/50 right now for the weekend.

Went out today for the first time,,,ohhh the anticipation.
Boat in the water , powere up gently and went 20 feet, then stopped. I could here the motor spinning. When it got back to shore in about 30 seconds (it was windy) found the set screws on the coupler slipping. Tightened them up and repeated the launch, got plane instantly and went 100 feet till the same happened. Back to the dremel tonight !

Got the HV Hydra mounted. It would be nice if Castle would figure out a way to mount the capacitors a bit more rigidly. They seem a bit flimsy. Same on my Hydra 120 that I got last year. Now just waiting on one 6mm connector and LiPo's :w00t:

Sorry I have not updated the thread on the run on the weekend.

It ran great for a lap, the 2280/12 planes it instantly, it was scary fast as well. On the second lap though, I had no rudder control so I shut it down and let it drift to shore. A few minutes later I found the problem,,,,the rudder broke off at the piont where the shaft meets the blade:w00t:

I must have hit something,,there are turtles around every now and then so maybe that was the cause. The rest of the boat appears to be fine. Anyway, I have a new rudder being shipped and hopefully it will be here for the weekend.

I have to say that a 1/8th scale boat is an impressive looking machine on the water, You really have to see one to appreciate it.

No video as I asked the girlfriend only to take some after a few shakedown laps.(just in case of disaster). I suppose she could have taken some vid of it floating back to shore.:bounce:

OK,,,finally. Here is the vid. its of the first part of the run, never went beyond 1/2 throttle as it was blowing steady 20 Mph and gusting to almost 40 with about 5-6 inches of chop:w00t: Oh yeah, and it was only 8 Deg C up here, about 45 F so it was cold.

A few passes to make sure all water cooling was flowing I gave it a few half throttle bursts and it went like crazy!. The boat seemed nicely balanced. Just after the vid, I bought it in and all was nice and cool.

Sent it out and after a two more laps, it stopped:cursing:

It drifted to shore in about 2 minutes thanks to the wind. I pulled off the cowling and everything still nice and cool. The motor struggled to turn over, almost as though it was fried, but given the temps,,, it should not have been the problem. After a few more freezing minutes, I decided to call it a day.

At home it had the same problem,,,,I dried everything out and noticed some water in the Hydra. Castle says they are water resistant but I suppose not waterproof. I'll have to talk to Castle about methods for better waterproofing. I mounted the controller so it is in the direct path of the cowling intake to add some air cooling as well. Anyway, after a few hours of drying, the motor is turning over again like nothing happened so all seems to be good! (now if I can just program it!!)

More vid to come the next time I go out!

Theres a different feeling waiting for your SV (300 bucks) to flip than there is waiting for your 1/8th (2000 bucks) to flip. Makes you think about your trigger finger just a bit more:flashfire:

Right now its on a 54Mph Hydro,,,,catch it if you can:bounce:

Seriously though, if FD takes any longer I'll send you some $$$$$ for it if thats OK and then when the jacket does make it here (if it makes it here) I'll send you that as well.
He also owes me a wack of 6mm gold connectors.:cursing: :cursing:

The Excites are working well, after a 5 minute run they are barely warm. I'm tempted to try them in a 2S configuration and see how they do.

I would try it for a short run 1-2 min and check temps... How many mAH are you putting in each pack after 5min. ????
