Brushless motors come in two electrical configurations having to do with how the wires from the windings are connected to each other (not their physical shape or location). The delta configuration connects the three windings to each other (series circuits) in a triangle-like circuit, and power is applied at each of the connections. The wye ("Y"-shaped) configuration, sometimes called a star winding, connects all of the windings to a central point (parallel circuits) and power is applied to the remaining end of each winding.

A motor with windings in a DELTA configuration gives less torque at low rpm's, but can give higher torque at top rpm. Wye configuration gives higher torque at low rpm, but not as high at top rpm. They are inverse in maximum torque applications.

A delta winding would normally be used for very high rpm applications where a small prop would be used. A Wye winding would be used when low rpm torque is most important. The difference being that at high rpms a Delta winding will turn a prop more efficiently then a Wye winding will. And if you check motor performance charts you will see that Delta windings can operate at greater amp loads then Wye windings can. Thats due to their design.
