Hello Guys,

as there seems to be some interest, I'll start the building review of a HPR06 also here on OSE. I hope you enjoy. Beside this, where would be a good place here to introduce myself and tell a bit about me and my hobbies?

HPR06 - Austrian Build

Beside building my "Fort-Knox" (nice expression Gerwin) I'll also build a HPR06 for season 2011. With my Repsol I have already a HPR06 so a second one is not necessary. Only Hanspeters new C5009 Mystic would be worth a try...:rockon2:

So the HPR06 in this review is a remittance work, which I'll do for my friend Wolfgang. He has seen our boats on our homepage as well as on Youtube and wanted one. Thats why I should build this HPR06 completely RTR including testing and finding the right setup for the boat. The choice of the setup is mine, the demand is to reach about 120km/h (75mph). Its not intended to be a highspeed model, scale look and reliability are more important.
Therefore it will also include a second hatch with the cockpit glasses for the glass cabinet as well as some pilots inside the cockpit. Surely the boat will also get a nice paint job, maybe with some airbrush.

hull: HPR06 in CFK (carbon/fibre - newest Version)
hardware: original HPR hardware including hydraulic steering
engines: 2x Tenshock 2250/7 with WK
ESC: 2x 180A Seaking/Turnigy with aditional caps
lipos: 2x 6S Turnigy 4000mAh 40C
props: pair of Octura X442 to Octura X447
speed: personal aim is to reach 130km/h (81mph)
transmitter: Futaba T3PM 2.4GHz mit FASST
miscellaneous: lipo-rail-system, CFK-motor mounts, CFK-servo mount, Notaus, 5mm Flex-Wire v. Gundert, 6mm LMT-bullets (best in the world I think), bolted hatch, div. scale parts

hull

As mentioned the hull is a HPR 115 in carbon/fibre. Hanspeter has again improved some parts of the laminate, this hull is the up-to-date version, beside being a "default-laminat" if you can say that to his hulls. The seam as well as the finish are crafted beautifully. As with all of my hulls it had to prove itself on the scale. The hull has 1975g, the hatch 275g --> makes altogether 2250g or 4.5pounds. Its not an ultralight hull but a normal carbon/fibre hull with reasonably weight and exceptional stiffness.

(I still like the look of this hull very much altough it might be a bit old-fashioned compared to the new mystic design)

mounting the rudder

First I have mounted the rudder. For this I use double sided tape on the mounting surface of the rudder and cut the shape out as exact as possible. Afterwards I stamp out the holes for the mounting drills and adjust the rudder on the hull using a bracket and an even surface.The height adjustment is just with visual judgment, I think thats good enough.

Then I take of the rudder, leaving the template still on the hull. I mark the holes and pre-drill them a bit by hand. Then I take the cordless screwdriver and drill them through, followed by a short test mounting if it fits as desired. As you see, the screws don't look good, they need an even surface.
So I use my Dremel with a spherical miller and grind the inside before filling it up with black epoxy resin. At least I put in a suitable piece of carbon fibre for strength and optics.

Finally I use some extra-long M3 screws (stainless steel !), cut them to the right length and the rudder can be mounted.

mounting the hydraulics

It was also my first time to mount these hydraulic mockups but its really easy and just looks amazing. How have I done it? First I mounted the hydraulik steering to the pivot of the rudder and adjusted the two hydraulic cylinders parallel to the "rump" of the hull. This means a distance of 6mm (1/4" should be right as well) between the mounting parts on the rear side of the hull to the bend for the "rumpf". Then I aligned them horizontally and fixed the 2 plates with double sided tape.

Maybe its contingency but the stainless steel wire exactly goes through the seam of the hull. At least drill the holes with a 2mm drill - finished.

drives

Last parts of the original hardware are the drives. This is my way, maybe a bit unconventional but it works. First I fit the drives to the desired position, I don't try to fit them exactly to the apex of the rear side. As you can see on the pictures the mounting plates have an offset of about 3mm to the edge of the tunnel.

On the upper mountings I made a little fillet, now they fit exactly in their position. These are the first parts I mount first, as before double sided tape before drilling the holes and screw them to the hull. Afterwards the same procedure to the mountings on the rear side of the hull. They have to be aligned 100% parallel to the hull, for this I use an aluminium profile and drills in 0.5mm steps. I put the aluminium profile to the inner side of the hull and adjust the drive till the gap between the drill and the drive is even over the whole length. I think the right distance was 8.5mm. Then you can mount the drives.

Last thing to do is to drill the hole for the "Steven-Tube" (brass tube where the flex shaft runs inside the teflon. For the used 5mm flex-wire I use a 6/8mm teflon tube and a 8/9mm aluminium tube. To mount it exactly in the middle I used a self made bushing with 9mm inner diameter and the right outer diameter. Now you can drill the holes and the'll be centered.

motor mounts

For the motor mounts I made some models out of cardbord. Took three tries until I had the desired fit inside the sponson. The contour was lined two times on a 2mm thick CFK HT plate.
Afterwards the usual stuff, cutting it out roughly and then grinding, filing and drilling the holes. Used bolt circle is 6x60° with 25mm (600er can size). At least two clearances for the cooling circuit as well as for saving weight and the optic.

I'm really satiesfied with the result, they look as desired.

Securing of the hatch

Quite an often discussed topic here. Haempu recommends two screws and two bolts, I decided to use four countersunk M3 screws. They are easy, inconspicuous and strong enough for the desired performance. On faster hulls (like my own HPR135), I'd go for M4 screws and maybe also increase the number to six screws.
First I center the hatch "inside" the hull with leftovers of CFK/GFK plates because they are available in 0.5mm steps. When the position is fixed I mark the positions and then drill a 2mm hole through the hatch as well as the hatch border inside the hull. The holes in the hatch are bored up to 3.5mm and then I make the counter sunk for the screw. For the holes in the hatch border I bore them up to 6mm because inside I use M3 knurled nuts if you know them. They can directly used, you just have to grind them a bit as well as the border in the hull and after degreasing I glue them in with some epoxy resin. It gives a nice look too.

Air scoop

Haempu probably won't like my solution but I find it easy and convenient. I fixed it and then drilled three 2.5mm holes completely through the scoop and hatch. Then I cut M3 threads in the resin scoop and glued it with resin to the hatch as well as I secured it with M3 screws. Surely I have to grind the end of the screws and spackle the scoop but it should be a connection for eternitiy and looks nice inside too.

Lipo Rail System

For mounting the Lipos I use a self made lipo rail system, probably the best known solution. I made the design with a CAD programm, the parts were cut out of CFK material on a milling machine. Ground plates measure 71x350mm and are out of 2.5mm HF CFK material. The sledges are out of 2mm black GFK, I think it gives a nice contrast concerning optic. You can move the packs about 125mm and 4-6S packs can be mounted - way enough for that project. For bigger projects I make these systems quite bigger, in my Supercat XL one ground plate already measures 475x120mm (!), at the moment I'm limited in size of CFK parts through the available material at 1000x500mm :confused2:

fixing the motor mounts

First I mount the motors on the mounts. As I still don't have the motors for this boat I used two LMT 1950 out of my HFK Prototype as kind of dummies. I need them to align both mounts as symmetrical as possible. Looks weird to me when the motors are not symmetric in a boat. The I position them in the hull and use a coupler and the flex shaft.
As flex shafts I use 5mm flex-wire from Gundert, I think its the best and strongest available. More common is the 4.75mm or 3/16" FlexWire but I'm not a fan of these. Then I adjust the mounts till I get a smooth curve in both flexwires.

Before I glue them in with resin I grind the right surfaces of the hull and the mounts, then I degrease everything with so-called "Bremsenreiniger". I didn't find a translation but it might would be "Brake Disc Cleaner".

Then I align the mounts again and fix them with some small dots of CA glue.

As you get dirty hands I have no photos of glueing them in, therefore I have to describe it. First I make a seam with some thickened 24h epoxy which I colored black. Then I laminate over each seam a layer of glassfibre with normal clear resin. Then I make the same on the other side of the mount. So each mount is fixed at about 20cm lenght with a resin seam and glass-fibre reinforcement.

mounting the drive shafts

After the motor mounts I fit the drive shafts, they are made out of a10/9mm aluminium tube. I make a smooth bend till the flex runs nearly without any friction and the tube follows the natural bend given through the motor mount. The water intakes are out of 4mm brass tube, you can see the position and how its built in on the pictures. The support of the drive shafts is out of 2mm GFK. After carefully sanding and degreasing everything I glued it in with 5min epoxy resin which I colored black to match the optic of the hull.

radio plate

Wolfgang likes scale optic and also a normal servo mount didn't appeal to him so it was the first time I built a radio plate in a boat. As it should be something special I designed it with a CNC program and it was also cut out with a milling machine. The letters are a groove in the surface and I think the optic is astonishing. With some motivation I'll paint the inside surfaces of the letters. The RC plate is mounted with glued in knurled nuts as sockets.
As for sure I used black expoxy resin as well as glassfibre reinforcements.

You may excuse the dusty optic of the hull but as I'm working all the time I had little motivation to clean it every time I make pictures. You may also see how I glued in the drive shafts and the water intake.

glueing in the lipo rails

I already presented the lipo rails, they are glued in using silicone. You may also use resin but silicon is strong enough as well and damps a bit in the case of a crash. They may also be removed whereas with resin this can get tricky. To glue them in properly I refilled the silicone in a syringe. The uper side of the plates I taped with Tesa to stay clean.

Drives and Flex-Wires

This was a work I acutally did today. I glued the flanged ball bearings in the drives as well as the flex-wires in the drive shafts. For this I use Loctite 648. The drive shafts I bored up to 4.9mm on Flos turning lathe and sanded the 5mm Flexwire until it fitted perfectly inside the drive shafts. After glueing these parts together I put them in the oven at about 60°C for tempering and improved strengthness.
(Leave them inside and turn them after 45min until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides, enjoy them still hot..... :w00t:)

Well I can recommend to use aquarium silicone which you use for aquariums/fishtanks. Its also availabe in black and you get a nice optic.

Hello Guys,

and here another part of the HPR06 Austrian build - review.

Not-Aus

As far as I can see it here a "Not-Aus" is not very common here at OSE. Where I live I think its nearly a must have and also a need on every boat meeting. What it does: Disconnects the receiver from power supply, eg. UBEC or reveiver battery. What for: Its a safety thing, when you pull the "Not-Aus" and the controller (without BEC) has no power it can not run. So if you have to rescue the boat or just want to change props without opening the hatch I can only recommend it. Here I used 3.5mm female bullet connectors which i glued to the surface of the hull. But be aware: CF-Sheet conducts electricity, therefore these connectors have to be 100% isolated from the hull:

Exhaust

As Wolfgang turned out to be an absolute scale fan I decided to make some custom exhausts for his HPR06. So basically I made a mockup from wood, used shrink tube and wax to get a kind of a positive mold. With some CF- and GFK sheet I laminated the "surface". After a bit of cutting and grinding I had the desired shape. Then I cut off two small pieces of brass tube and some CA glue to make the prototype and hoped Wolfgang would like them. On the photos you can also see the "Not-Aus", already with the male connectors in them.

Luckily Wolfgang liked it and so I could make the final ones. As brass tube was not perfect my friend Christian made me some exhausts out of aluminium on his lathe. First I wanted to polish them but then I decided to have the "brushed"-look. As it can be seen I glued a small GFK sheet inside the exhaust and drilled two holes in each one. Behind these I filled everything with expoxy and also put in two M3 nuts. So I can srew each exhaust with an M3 counter sunk screw to the exhaust. I hope you may understand.

Wind Screen

If you want each HPR06 is delivered with a windscreen and window frame. As said Wolfgang likes Scale this was a "must-have". But as this might also be a weak point I used a broken and repaired hatch from my HPR06 for this. So basically he has two hatches, one for driving just with the air scoop and another one for presenting it with air scoop and window-glass.

First a picture of the set and the repaired hatch. For these I used M2 hew-screws with a flat head because they look the best.

After that I drilled 25 holes with a 2mm drill, the holes are already implied on the window frame as you can see in the picture above. After that I cut it out and fitted it to the hatch:

As it can be seen above I fixed it to the hatch and drilled the 25 holes also through the hatch. The blue line marks where I have to cut out the hatch itself. But before this I cut out the plexiglass windscreen with a small scissor. Quite tricky to get it right, especially in the narrow corners.

Next step was to mount the 6S1P 4000mAh 40C Turnigy Lipos to the "sledges" of the lipo rail system. For this first I stick them to the sledge with some double sided tape and then I used shrinking tube. To fit to the rest of the boat I used black one:

The Setup

As the desired Tenshock 2250/7 are not available I had to change the motors. After some discussions with others I decided to go for two Leopard 4074/2Y engines with 2150kv. These should fit very well to the boat and allow speeds around 130km/h with Octura X447. As controllers I use two 180A Seaking ESC's, each with 3 additional caps directly soldered to the original circuit board. This gives 6000µF per controller, should be way enough. I also use the original Leopard water jackets, as some might see I turned on each one one of the nipples to get a shorter cooling circuit.

Then I connected everything up and cut the wires and soldered the connectors. As it can be seen I suited the parts in the hull and cut the wires to the minimum. As bullet connectors I use 6mm LMT system because I think it offers outstanding chucking power and little resistance. Here the wired up system outside the boat. I also marked the motors to know to which side each drive-train belongs. As you may see I want the props to spin "inside" and not outside.

Result

After that work the hull was ready for screwing all the components inside. The water outtakes are fitted to the inside of the tunnel, if you look carefully you'll see. As far as up to now I'm quite satiesfied because the cooling system as well as the rest of the wiring are kept as short and efficient as possible. As receiver/transmitter system I used a Futaba T3PK 2.4Ghz system. Servo is a Savöx SC 1251MG LowProfile Servo if not mentioned yet. I think the rest of the pictures are self explaining:

The RTR weight of the boat is now about 5800g with LiFe Receiver pack. The test run was made at less than 0°C so it was very cold. I used a pair of Octura X447 cut to 45.5mm for the test. As it was the first real test and the CG and the trimms where not yet set right I couldn't give full throttle because otherwise I'd have to pump up the rescue boat which I didn't want. But setup seems to be pretty nice, I estimate the speed around 120km/h.

At the moment the hull is sent away to get a paint job. I hope you enjoy this review and my work, I'll continue when the boat is back from painting and I can present it as well as the rest of the testing before I'll hand it over to its owner.

What timing did you use?
I have the same setup and same props in my sprintcat 35" except that running on 5s, now I will run 6s!!! I suppose your temps were ok?

Hi Dimitris,

Timing was set to 11.25° with the ProgCard. If the hull is back from the paint job and ready for testing I want to try a pair of Octura X447's Andy Browns and then may increase the timing stepwise. Temps were ice-cold, like the water, the air, my hands & everything else.

thanks for the nice comment. But I looked the pictures of your HPR Building thread (couldn't read the text there and translator failed) and you also put a lot of effort and time in your boat. But I think HPR's really are worth the investment!

Amazing Manuel, just amazing. Your "two hatch" idea is one I though of doing as well. I love the scale appearance of the see thru windshield, yet was too worried about installing it for running purposes. I would like to do another hatch for when its on display, scale looking, with drivers... :drool:

Amazing! One wouldn't expect a China powertrain in an HPR, but they run great. Awesome job Manuel. She looks good with the Outerlimits paint scheme. Your build gives me much needed motivation for my builds.

@ jb1234: First I glued the two female bullets to a 1mm piece of GFK sheet and then I glued the complete sheet with the two female connectors to the inside of the hull that the connectors are on the same level as the outer surface of the hull. For the glue I used epoxy resin like I use it as glue for everything inside my boats.

@ Shane: As far as I remember 25x25mm but I can measure it for you when I'm at home again.

@ Jerry: I use colored epoxy resin, also used it to glue the nuts for the hatch lock. There are many different colors available, you add 2-5% to the mixed resin and it will have the desired color. You may visit this thread: http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/showthread.php?t=21765&page=2 and look at post #55. In that HPR C5009 I used blue epoxy resin color!

Thanks for the prompt reply regarding the rudder mount. So far the 25mm wide by 25mm long checks out. My pod is 25mm wide and 30mm long so it should fit. If you could double check with your one when its convienient that would be terrific.
And one last question where can I buy the rudder assembly from?

Hello guys,

yesterday I worked again on the boat, some little finishing work. Removed the cable mess and installed a few more red-anodized M3 screws. Also assembled the scale hatch with the cockpit glasses. Will take a few pictures tomorrow and post them within the next few days.

@ Shane: Measured both today and they were 24mm wide and 25mm long. And these are available here: http://www.hpr-powerboats.ch/

Thank you Manual for the info about the rudder it was a big help. I will get one direct from HPR. Its a pitty they dont have an internal water pick up in the blade but it is the way it has been designed.
Thank you for all the measurements, its good to have that info before you buy anything as the picture does not show that detail.
