Hey guys, thought i'd start a thread on my 39.5" mono, seems to be a few of these larger mono's being built for the 1717. It is somewhat of a DF41 knockoff and is well made in my opinion. Its gonna be powered by a Castle 1717 on 6s, with a T180 ESC. Hoping for somewhere in the low 50's.............

Some pics of equipment and progress. Thanks for lookin'!:thumbup1:

Very nice choice of materials (hull-motor-esc......) I use same layout too.

the support for the brass tube can be much smaller

I am wondering what propeller this combination can handle, especially the esc

Thanks guys! Yes, i shoot more vid than a "B" movie studio, so i will surely throw some up by this weekend!

I have used my home-made mounts on 6 different boats and they have never failed..........i have a 1527 mounted on one in my 45" Avatar Dumas...............maybe i'm lucky, but i go with what works. I made epoxy flow holes in the hull mounts and they are quite long themselves.

I'm thinking of using either an x445......x447.........or x645, gonna start on the smaller end though.

x450 is on the smaller side but a safe option, and should net mid-50's for speed.

I had the same hull too... sold it to b.mcdaniel... very nice clone... as rumdog said...

I ran mine on both a Lehner 2250 and a 2280.... both ripped.... I actually used a x445 with great results, ... of course I was spinning it at 38,000 rpm... I propped to a x450 for 8s..

Nice vid Scott..................i remember seeing that one before with the sound bouncing off the hillsides......sounds mean!

2 questions:

Do you think since mine is a 1580kv and a bit smaller motor that i should use an x445........447...?

Is my ESC adequate based on the smaller props i mentioned? Im not going for huge all out speed or SAW runs, just fun/friendly racing, so i was thinking a bit smaller prop, keep things cool and amp draw down a bit.

forescott
12-02-2010, 11:07 PM
The 1717 has plenty of power to spin a big prop. However @ 35000 unloaded rpms a big prop is not a good idea. I think your in the ballpark starting with the 45mm prop. Thats probably barely enough diameter to get this big heavy hull on plane, but I know guys have used them with luck. Its a good starting point. I'm thinkin' that you'll end up with a cool reliable setup and a prop in the 47-48mm range. Ideally I think that motor will run better on 5s, with the 452. I'm looking forward to seeing it run!

I cant say enough good things about the t-180. It has a huge 360 amp burst rate, and I've been really happy with mine. Every esc has its limitations, but I think the t-180 might be slightly under rated.

Make-a-Wake
12-02-2010, 11:47 PM
I own several T180's and have been very pleased with them as well. I run one with a Neu 1527 1y in my 45" Dumas and have had zero issues with it. I have heard the same thing about the conservative rating, that they are more like a 200 amper. In fact, I ran across this from G-freak(dont know much about them) "ACTUAL FACTORY SPECS ARE 180A CONTINUOUS AND 360A PEAK BUT WE RATE THEM REALISTICALLY, BASED ON OUR EXTENSIVE TESTING, AT 200A CONT."

Thanks, i'll throw an x445 on first................got a 447 as well

boy did mine get on plane with a x445... even weighed down with 10s2p.... was a absolute rocket, and no question with the small prop she carved.... handles very much like the smaller df's only BIGGER :)

I know I didn't think the x445 was enough diameter at first... but I spun her with some real rpms... mine (now brads) has a ball bearing strut too..!

I think that motor will handle waay more prop than you think. But you are doing the right thing by taking it slow. Props testing can get expensive if you start out too small though. I run a 648 and 452 in my 40 w/leopard 5692 and it doesn't even break a sweat! Lookin good!!

No offset.................

What do you alll think of trying an x645...........went well with the 445 and 447............seems like a 645 would be next in line.......

I'm concerned about the T180 ESC. Thoughts?

blackcat26
12-16-2010, 09:25 PM
If your motor and speed control are low temp'd I would step up and try the 645. Do a few passes and bring her in and check everything. A 447 actually has less total pitch than a 642 does. If it was me I would try the 645. If that looks good I would prolly skip the 646 and try a 648.

Thanks rearwheelin'................. I own several T180's and they are darn near bulletproof. It has been mentioned that they have tested at more like 200 amps constant. The BEC's have always worked..............

I threw my 645 on but the prop hub is smaller than the 447 hub so it looks goofy with the big drivedog...........no smooth transition.......and the hub is shorter too. Gonna order an x450 and probably use it as my final choice as it 'may' hit 60mph, i'm more than pleased with the solid, cool running setup and im not "racing" anyways.

I´m doing 62-63mph with an X452 prop, detongued, and cupped...

After a while a sympathic gentleman asked me if i would like to use is real boat in order to find the boat.....
I searched 10 minutes long and didn´t find anything!
Altough is son, checked some red from the bottom, so i dived in to 13 feet water and found the canopy....:ThumbsDown01:

After a while, the son again...told me...check that out,the canopy was 50 feets away from the hull :eek:
Dived again and retrieved it..The only damaged thing was the turnigy bec....

I was able to get away with it in the 38* water............now into the 50*'s i have settled on the 447 as my summer prop. Ran today in fact, ol Vader is just a treat to run................never a problem, and runs smooth as silk on the last 3 inches of the pad:thumbup1:

Threw a GPS in it today just for kicks and got 55.6 in small chop with th 447.......................plenty since im not racing for pinks or trophys, gathers quite a large audience at the lake as well.

Runtime today was 5 minutes easy..............mostly WOT..........loooooong straights and sweet carving turns. Cells were 3.85 when done, so i had another 1 to 1 1/2 minutes left. Wow nice build man thinking of building one of these with the exact same setup got a few questions though what rudder and turn fins did you use and also how far from the transom is your motor mounted and what prop would you reccomend as the best all rounder ?
Thanks

Hey Brushless, I ran that setup for quite some time but have actually gone to a Neu 1527 1y on 6s2p. I live in the southern US and it stays over 100* for weeks on end in the summer. Water surface temps get quite high in "non flowing" lakes and I was always fighting my temps. Unfortunatley i set this boat up in winter and would have had to prop down quite a bit to run it in thie summer heat without the ESC thermaling which it did a couple times. I run a a T180 and wanted to stay with it so I simply pulled the 1527 from my 45" Dumas "scale"skiboat and threw it in. This may sound lame but it also fits the whole "Vader" thing being a long black motor and looks nice in it. I can now run an x450 all the way thru 10,000 mah with zero issues and it is still over 50 mph, granted not 59, but its plenty fast and i'm not racing anyone really. I am starting to tone things down a hair in my setups to allow year round running.

The 1717 on 6s is a sweet setup for sure and i obviously could have thrown an x445 on it but this is just the way i went. In your climate i would imagine you could run the 1717 year round with an x448 or so and have a super boat! Now i have a 1717 for some other project if i need it too.

I used this rudder and these fins:
