View Full Version : Schulze 40-160: Solder won't stick???
Trying to solder connectors to a new Schulze 40-160. The solder won't stick to the wire like it should. It's as though the wires are specially coated or something.
Is there a special solder needed, or a special prep for the wires?
Thanks for helping a noob.

rosin or acid flux might help

You need to use quality lead/tin electrical solder. You also need a hot iron for the heavy wires, a soldering gun won't work. I use a 40W 1/4" wide wedge-tip Weller iron, but a 60W or 80W would work even better.

I use a good wicking liquid flux to dip the stripped end into and then use an 80W soldering iron with the wide tip or a propane torch on low setting. Just a note you have to be careful if you use a torch as it can anneal the plugs and you will loose the firm fit.

Cool, thanks.
We've been using an old school Archer soldering gun. I think it is 100W. With 60/40 solder. It works fine on other wires, but just won't stick on the Schulze wires. We'll give the wicking liquid flux a try.

NEVER EVER USE ACID CORE ON ELECTRONICS! You will never get it cleaned out of the strands of the wire then they WILL corrode! Everything else is good advice!
