Before I start let me say I know this should have stared at the begining (box stock boat), but I just got my GPS.

Hull: blue printed (not complete but close), all hardware rerigged and siliconed.
Prop: grimracer 42x55 two blade.
Batteries: orien 7.2v V-MAX 3300mah 3" fwd of stock to set C/G at 8" fwd of transom.
Water condition: moderate chop and wind blowing.
Motor: ammo 36-50 2300kv
ESC: stock
Drive trim: -1 or 0 (somewhere inbetween)
Tab position: 0

This setup is pretty rock solid and went 35.4mph (good race set up in my opinion)

I moved the batteries back to the stock position and blew the boat over backwards with no increase in speed.

So I went to the otherside of the lake where there was cover from the wind providing smoother water. Batteries in stock position and same setup as above. The boat was pretty uncontrollable, I wish a had someone with a video camera there because I had a nice 20-25 foot prop ride (only the prop in the water, boat completely dry). However, the top speed was only 34.5mph

I will be testing other props and also the stock motor this weekend. I will also be changing the set up a bit. plus I have some new 4200mah batteries to run.

I am a little disapointed with the speed, but all my testing so far was just going off of other boats and guessing, so now the real testing can begin.

Thanks, JL

Avanti we run an ammo 2600 with a grim 45x68 we clocked it at 47.7 mph before she started the tail dance. But we only drag race also.

what batteries were you running prince?

Darin Jordan

I would have to say that if your batteries are at all questionable, that's a good place to start...

However, about 37 or so is what I would expect from an NiMH powered SV27 with that prop... Even though that motor has a greater KV than the stock motor, it does NOT have the torque, so you will lose something there...

You should be able to make it faster, however... What are your temps??

I ran mine with 4S1P 3300mah PolyRC 20C Lipos with an Octura X646 prop and otherwise bone stock and GPS'd it at 43mph... that's with the STOCK motor... But then, 4S Lipos have a higher loaded voltage that 12-cells, so there is a lot to be gained there...

I did not check temps this was just a quick shake down run today to see where I was for a starting point. but the batteries and motor were pretty warm to the touch.

I'm hoping to touch 40mph on the 4200mah
I know my prop needs work too.
I also want to make sure my drive strut is @ 0' with the keel.
my current setup is great for stability but I know I can get more speed out of it and then go back to this set up for racing.

thanks for the input Darin

no set up changes were made I ran with the trinity 4200mah mounted 3"s fwd of stock the boat went 37.1mph but was very unstable with the extra power. 40+ is right there I just have to tweak my setup and prop.

We were running 14 3600 nimhs We got 47.1 with 2-2's 3300 but the nimhs were more stable i guest weight she still had more..but ecame unstable

Here is a short vid and a pic of one of my boats. Preped the boat and did a few mods, like cooling and drive stuff and added a M445 prop. If anyone is interested in the boat PM me its a new boat.

Same set up as above just swap out the prop for a 40x52/3
trinity 4200 7.2
41.6mph
the boat has more in it with this set up I still could not stay in the power, I will shift the weight further fwd tomorrow

but wow 40mph barrier Blown away I'm very Happy! (next stop 50mph)

Avanti
12-01-2007, 04:49 PM
shifted the orien 3300s fwd 3.5" from stock got 37.7mph on a 40x52/3 grim
shifted the trinity 4200s 4.5" fwd of stock and got 42.1mph before it took a dunk and I had to grab the fishing pole.

I'm sure I can break 45 this weekend.

its getting better.

ice329. do you care to share any of your setup secrets and mods?

ice329
12-01-2007, 07:08 PM
There not my secrets... Grim Racer wrote up a very good set up page. I just do most of his things and a few of my own. I pull everything, Zpoxy wood, stand and inside seem on hull, I silicone all the hardware and adjust it. Mostly from grims page, slightly positive on the strut and same for the tabs. I like to add a full legnth tefon insert in the drive tube, A balaced/sharpened X642 or M445. OSE water jacket, open the water pickup a little, bigger ID tubing, correctly setting the radio. The hull can only handle so much speed, you cant win a race upside down. A great set of batterys are a good place to start. Here is grims page http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4752309/anchors_4752309/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#4752309

right now I am tuning for top speed, not a race set up.
Later I will tune for racing, as I found out that with better batteries my current race setup is crap.

thanks for the info. I don't have an sv, but I do like to know as much as I can.

how much are you wanting to see your boat for?

I actually moved it onto my dresser...kinkda hopeing it dont sell. If it does great... if it dont great. Here is a link you can take a good look at the boat and all the phases of prep etc.

if you want a very fast super vee set up the batt. in 4S2P configuration, the stock speed controller can handle it no problem. but hold on get ready for an insane ride!

Avanti

I want to break 45 on 12 cell nimh for now

Avanti
12-02-2007, 01:36 PM
I'm going to have one more go at it this weekend but I don't think 45 is in my current set up (the battery and motor maybe) the prop needs work and weight placement need work.

Avanti
12-02-2007, 04:19 PM
well I threw on the port turn fin and it help with stability a bit but it scrubbed speed and the boat would not turn left to save it's life.

41.8mph (40x52/3grim 7.2 4200trinities) tonight that is all for this weekend I am still happy even though I did not get 45mph. I have to rethink my set up and get a few more props.

What does it mean to blueprint the hull? And by rerigged you mean different running gear or just remounted it? If it was just remounted why and where? I'm new to rc boats so sorry if these sound like ignorent questions.

well I threw on the port turn fin and it help with stability a bit but it scrubbed speed and the boat would not turn left to save it's life.

How odd. Mine turns left just fine. It was OK without the port fin, and much better after I added it.

I am curious as well. When you all are trying to squeeze every last MPH out o your SVs is it all SAW running or are you trying to get the fastest oval runs you can??

I am oriented towards oval racing, so for me SAW speed is fine, but going fast around an oval is more than simple SAW speed.

blue printing is sanding the hull flat so there are no imperfections like dips and bumps.
rerigged with same hardware using silicone and adjusting thing to the right position. the factory was a little sloppy on my trim tabs (which need to be replaced with better ones anyway, but I have not got them yet).

My opinion is still not made up on the usefulness of the port trim tab. I made some more changes tonight and hopefully I will get to test it tomorrow.

my friends BJ26 just went 42.9mph so I have so extra incentive to get my set up dialed in.

obrien

woo hoo! I have more work to do.

Avanti
12-09-2007, 09:54 PM
Bill-socal... I am trying to get the boat dialed in for top speed right now, trying to get some stability as well

I want a stable 38-42 for oval racing ,but I'm not there yet.

RCprince
12-10-2007, 07:58 PM
Avanti why not make your own tabs...I made some for my outboard Supervee...I work flawlessly...The factory ones seems like you'd crack the transom trying to adjust them.

Dale Koblitz
12-10-2007, 10:30 PM
The factory ones aren't adjustable are they? Thats why they sell adjustable upgrade ones.

OSE makes bolt on set that look great. I have bent mine without a problem FWIW.

Avanti
12-11-2007, 12:28 AM
now that obrien has his BJ26 dialed in the SV27 needs some serious retooling and rigging to keep up. I also have a lot of work to do on the prop. he has my by 2 mph right now so I have my work cut out for me, plus I have yet to get the boat to lay down.

I have some great ideas to put to the test (might share them later, I want to test them first).

I hate to tell you moe, but the BJ ran even better today.

Still leaks like crazy though.

so whats your point you will be caught by the vee sooner or later

Avanti my cousin is one of the masters of rc..he got us into it back in the early 90's....he took his brother's SV...trimmed it sweet and had it running 47mph plus with a $34.00 ammo 2600 and 2 3300 2s thunder power with a grimreacer 45x68; although I thought that prop was a lil to much, He made it reliable...it ran beautiful..he gave it to my other cousin for thanksgiving to get into Rc....

obrien
12-11-2007, 09:22 PM
Its just a matter of getting the hull right and the setup better, and the boat will lay down and run.

I have to keep working though. I can't make it easy for him.

RCprince
12-11-2007, 11:23 PM
Of course not Obrien...all though that SV ran great he was still 5 miles behind my BJ

obrien
12-11-2007, 11:33 PM
didn't you put that 2600 ammo in your boat with the lipos?

RCprince
12-12-2007, 12:12 AM
yep we both ran the ammo 2600

Avanti
12-12-2007, 10:36 PM
I spent some time on my prop today also put the tabs down a bit
the tabs settled the boat but scrubbed speed and melted one of my trinities
I just need to find the sweet spot

Avanti
12-14-2007, 12:23 AM
obriens new top speed has me thinking I will not be catching him with this combo.

so I will likely start consentrating on other projects.

I hate second place :P

I do not believe the sv hull is capable of reaching 48.7 on nimhs

Bill-SOCAL
12-14-2007, 02:53 PM
It will with one of these in it:

http://www.scaleaerobatics.org/BOATS/motors.jpg

That is a Lehner 3060/10 on top and a Neu 1527/1.5Y on the bottom. I am going to try the 3060 here:

http://www.scaleaerobatics.org/BOATS/Viper-a.JPG

It will replace the Lehner 1940/8 that is in there now. I still have a few bugs to work out, but I want this boat to be FAST! Besides, it needs the weight.

Avanti
12-14-2007, 03:06 PM
hum now you have me thinking
what are the specs on that motor and what kind of esc requirements

domwilson
12-14-2007, 03:22 PM

The 3060/10 is going into a 44-inch Delta Force mono hull called a "Sniper". It is an open class mono. It will run on 10S2P.

These are some photos of Paul Pachmayer's Sniper. Mine will be orange.

The yellow boat with "CyberStorm' on it is my boat (I got it from Paul). It is an 32-inch mono with a Nemesis 10XL and runs on 4S2P 5000.

Bill, You're scaring me....

Are you really from So. Cal?

Bill-SOCAL

Why would it scare if I was from SOCAL??

Which indeed I am!! South Orange County. Ladera Ranch to be exact just next to Mission Viejo.

The scaring me part...That's just one of those sayings when people are seriously into something. Something you would say to a mad scientist...A figure of speech. A joke. A story with a humorous climax.

Oh, I was asking about the So. Cal. because I'm here in San Diego.

Bill-SOCAL

That's the pond in Mission Bay, right?? Never been there. Maybe I need to come on down sometime. Do they have particular days, etc.? I know the sailboat guys uses it too.

We're getting a regular group up at Legg Lake in Whittier. A bit far for you to come on a regular basis.

But rest assured, there are a fair number of boat guys around. So I take it that there are not many boats at your place on a regular basis??

domwilson
12-14-2007, 08:01 PM
Yep, it's by Mission Bay. Since I got a BJBL26, I'm not there very much myself. I sometimes go on the weekend. I don't see many people down there. It's been kind of cold lately. When It warms up or when ever I finish modding these boats, I'm going to start going again more frequently. Just trying to get more people interested. It's been a lonely hobby. I've haven't heard if there is a club. Not many LHS carry boat parts here. The guys at several LHS say that there isn't much interest for boats here, which they find kind of strange being that this is a coastal city. Maybe if someone offered free beer, that might generate some interest.
