View Full Version : Bare Genesis and Apparition Hulls

FighterCat57
10-16-2010, 09:37 AM
Pete Z designed some excellent Water Cooled in sponson motor mounts for both the Apparition and the Genesis. These make the perfect twin cat project boats.

Both the Castle 15xx series and the Leopard 40 series fit in the sponsons of these hulls. Even the Apparition.

OSE has hardware and electronics to help complete these project hulls and 100mm stinger drives will soon be available. :thumbup1:

Let us know when they come in. These are blank hulls with no paint/decals?

They are bare hulls, no drill marks, ready for paint.

This reminds me of that old thread about you not spending so much on boats. Now you literally buy them by the dozen! Lol wish I wasn't so low on cash, I'd like one if I wasn't.

Yeah, I know. This stuff is like crack. But what the hell. I'm retired and have some play money.

I don't know about which one is better as a twin, but mudl seems to think his 83mph Genesis twin is pretty cool.

OK, so what is the quality level of the genesis hull? Is it epoxy as I have heard reported, or is it a polyester hull? (either is fine I guess, ran polyester for years and still have some)

How straight do these genesis hulls come? Are they better than the average china hull, or on the same level?

I have a twin apparition hull and an empty skunkworks hull hanging from the rafters. neither impress me much for thier glass work, but for the money they are nice and fun (not digging on either, they are not a premium hull that is all). the skunkworks is a very nice looking hull and a bit deeper than the apparition but I have not done anything to it yet.

This would look nice next to my 40" scarab hull.

I am trying to decide if I should build the skunkworks 32" cat or get a genesis.....

FC have you run this motor; Turnigy 500 H3126 Brushless outrunner 1300KV ?
I saw the scorpion 3026 1400kv Mudl used was rated over 1600 watts. I read these Turnigy 500's are closer to 1500kv @ 1500 watts, and for $20 a peice... probably an affordable alternative ? It might not run 80 but it should be very fast on 6s.

Alfa Spirit
10-20-2010, 08:39 PM
Mudl' s Genesis is very fast, A high voltage setup is a good idea. You should try 8S for 2 combos with two 1200kV motors :glare:
Low current, less heat that's good. Two Turnigy Marine 80A-HV ESC aren't very expensive

Yes. I run them in Das Boot. They are excellent motors with a TON of torque! Pete Z has water cooled mounts for just that purpose. Also, TFL is designing the water cooled mounts for production within the month. :thumbup1:

Jacked1
10-20-2010, 09:06 PM
It will have 2 outrunners per side inline and 6s banks of 5ah 40c batts on each side. (two outdrives with one on each side like a normal twin) Each motor will be around 100amps so 4 x 100amps(or a little less) x 23volts = 9200w and run counter rotating x457s hopefully when all done and maybe cut them down depending on the motor. And i am thinking the T600 1400kv and just not run it to it's limits or the 1300kv or 1600kv Turnigy 500 H3126 and run 80amps per motor. I have seen plenty of these ran on 5s x 2 so it won't be that much heavier. 5.4ish pounds of motors and batts if i use the smaller motors.

I don't know why that would be so far fetched? I am just trying to do different things.

RCKong
10-20-2010, 09:09 PM
I got the 80 HV's... I just don't want to sack up and get the scorpion motors @ $160... but as always you get what you pay for.

That would be 12 6s packs.

RCKong
10-20-2010, 09:20 PM
seriously dood, I have found there is a fine balance between boat size, its capacity, weight, and power. If one of these is more than the other it negatively effects the performance of the machine. Thats alot of lipos to have to get from the bottom of the lake.

Jacked1
10-20-2010, 09:39 PM
I think there is a misunderstanding! :o
Bahahaha! I agree 12x6s packs is INSANE and would be very expensive after it sank the boat!!!
I am talking about 12 cells total so 2 6s packs. :tongue_smilie:
so just 805g x 2. :beerchug:

And my setup prolly wouldn't be able to make it to 9kw but it would have the potential. Anyway i just think 4 motors would be freggin awesome!

Do you have a genesis? Your plans may change once you have the hull in hand. I planned twin 1520's with 6s1p per side. To even fit 1 6s 5000 mah pack i the sponson, some trimming of the deck lip is needed. I opted for 9xl's and 5s1p per motor. Still a snug fit.

hmmmm.. i would prolly get the 4 x 3s packs so i dunno if i could put 2 in the middle and 2 in the sponsons and put the motors back as far as possible? but anyways if it all doesn't fit i will just move it to a bigger hull or run 4s and higher kv. Thanks for the info!! :beerchug:

I've got a couple of 8XLs for mine, but after seeing the size of the hull (it actually looks small for its size, and its a lightweight) I,m thinking twin UL-1 systems on 4S each would be more than enough.

8s nice! I've done 12s/880kv in that hull. Waaay too much weight, but was a rocket ship! You'll probably do better on 8s or 10s. Remember you don't need as much total mah with lower amp higher volt systems. Just make sure you have enough C rating and try to keep the weight down.

I can get fully painted undrilled hulls if there is an interest. There is a 12 piece minimum order, so would need a few people to show intent. Order timing is about 15 days for new orders. So just let me know guys. It can be done.

My only complaint with the painted hull is the lacquer clear coat peels very easy.

Fighter, is it possible to do a second coat of clear that would limit the amount of peel?

I've found that acrylic lacquer is pretty tough and bonds pretty well. I just don't think it'll help the poor bond to the hull and between coats. I've easily ripped all the paint off down to the bare hull, with a gentle tug on the tape. It's really bad. Ask anyone who own's them. There's part of the clear coming off by the tape. (probably some exception. Where's Lipo Power? He's probably got a few with perfect clear coat. ) He he.

I noticed that the boats are kits and need to be assembled. Are the hulls pre-drilled? How much would it cost to install hardware, stuffing tube, motor mounts, etc. PM me. Thanks.

Ah, thanks, that reminds me to add the Assembly option. I'm dragging my feet on it for two reasons;

1. Having them pre-assembled at the factory = poor quality
2. Assembling them myself = many hours of work & little compensation.
- it also opens the door for anyone to complain about imperfections.

I'm really focusing on the KIT format. Assembly is easy. Just takes a bit of time.

I would feel confident putting it together if the hulls were pre-drilled. I'm somewhat of a new boater and would not want to ruin a boat because of my lack of experience.lol I would feel confident installing just not drilling.

Not to worry, I'll put something together for you. Just order the one you want and send me an email with what you want pre-drilled and I'll drill it up for you at no charge.

PS- I think everyone here still get's a bit nervous when drilling a new hull!

pre-drilled is a cool idea!

It limits the hardware choices. Even with what limited variety I'm offering, there are different bolt patterns for the same hull.

Pre-drilled is only good if locking in to a specific hardware setup. Or in a perfect world, where hardware would all be the same bolt pattern.

Same here, I can install the hardware and glue the stuffing tubes in place but I don't want to ruin the hull by drilling in the wrong spots or at the wrong angle.

uh yeah, buying hull and hardware together, you will know where and what to pre-drill

In that case, perhaps drill templates might be a good way to go... Hmmm. Maybe I could cut some vinyl drill templates.

I typically drill hardware holes with a dremel grinder. It makes a bit of dust, but helps ensure a nice round hole without chipping the fiberglass.

If I had a vinyl template... It would not only ensure correct placement... but correct hold size too.

Let me see what I can come up with. :thumbup1:

Clear Rustoleum acrylic enamel should work well. Although, there's probably something better that someone here might be able to suggest.

It doesn't matter what the hull was made from if you use epoxy! Thin it with denatured alcohol (NOT the stuff from walgreens, etc. that is isopropyl and contains water!)

Thin it to a consistency suitable for brushing. Don't overdo it! I use at least 30 minute epoxy so it has time to flow out. It will be strong and clear.

Fightercat, you have access to different hulls they make. Take one of the carbon genesis hulls and one of the gelcoated glass hulls. Smell them and see if you can tell a difference. I have a bad nose, and can not tell the difference between the two if the hulls are old. If newer, you can smell it. Also, try wiping it down with rag with some acetone on it. Epoxy should not be phased, but newer polyester might feel a little tacky afterwards.

Also try to compare the colors. I know the carbon boats are black, but see if the resin looks clearer than the gelcoat boats.

The boats in question should be epoxy! As I have mentioned in the past, people think of composites as containing two parts, but it is really three. The fabrics are treated with a binder to help the resin bind to the fabric. Carbon fiber is only compatible with epoxy resins, matt with polyester resins; kevlar, eglass and sglass with either (typically!).

Epoxy can be used over either of them, but the first thing I would do would be to scuff it up and wipe it down with acetone. You want that surface really clean and rough so the next layer of epoxy bonds to it really well.

Now, this is my personal opinion following, and worth twice what you paid for it! :bounce: You want to attach items securely to the hull, especially the motor mount. Before doing anything to smooth out the inside of the hull, I would attach these items. Anything you put between the base layup resin and the epoxy to hold in these items is a weak link. I am amazed when i take apart a used boat at how easy things come out of them. People actually epoxy in an item after the inside of the hull was painted! yeah, the epoxy might be strong, but how much adhesion does that paint have? Remember, epoxy is a mechanical bond. Give it a good surface, and it is incredibly strong. But even epoxy will pop right out of a mold since it is waxed!

So, I would just scuff the surface, clean it and epoxy in the things you want. I also do not use the hobby epoxy for that, it comes out rather easy. I use a laminating resin that I thicken with glass fibers or kevlar pulp - very strong. I do not have experience with 30 minute epoxy vs the 5 minute hobby stuff. Why get 30 minute epoxy when I have a gallon of laminating resin?

Why do you want to coat the inside of the hull anyways? leave the nice carbon look. If you want it shiny, then I would brush on laminating resin. I use the epoxy from UScomposites.com and it works great. People love to rave about the west systems, and it is good, but it is very pricey. If you are just brushing it on as a sealer, either will work just fine. The Qt kit of west is about $45, the USC is 1/2 that.

if you use a paint on the inside, I am afraid you limit the future bond strength of anything you attach to the hull unless you are using a very strong two part paint. besides, you are just adding weight after buying a carbon fiber hull?!?!?!?!?! Why????

also watch the sunlight exposure. Epoxy is not UV stabilized and sunlight can damage it. so only run that hull in the dark!!! nah, who stores thier RC boat outside in the sunlight? The small amount of exposure they get while running should not effect it at all, that is more for large things that spend thier lives outside like full size boats and cars, but then they are usually painted or protected someway.

Hope this helps, PM replied to fightercat.
