i have a castle 1512 1.5y in my miss geico with a turnigy 180. do you guys think in is safe to try running 2 3s 5000mah 40c batteries threw it or will it blow the speed control? what prop would work good with this setup? have 6.5 mm castle connectors on the engine and 5.5mm on the batteries.

since i took these pictures the wires i spun around so they are facing the hull now. reason being it was popping the Tupperware like seal up while running the boat.

No problem at all with that setup. I am running the same motor on a 150a esc with no issues. Ran mine on 6s with a m440 and got around 58mph out of her. I'm sure some are gonna say too many rpm's but I like em.

getting 2 turnigy 11.1v 5000mah 40c in this week from the usa warehouse. I'll see if i can get a video of the test run. what are you using to cool the motor? should i just go with the old school water cooling coil?

I made a can at work since I didn't see any for sale. The coil style may not cool that well on a finned motor. Mine stayed just over a hundred degrees for about 5 100yd passes.

still new to this what is a temp to stay below?

You boys are "flyin". Pretty close to the 60 mph barrier. I am very interested to see how fast this hull will actually go before it becomes an aircraft. Very impressive boat. Will be installing the rudder off set this coming week hoping to see the remaining bounce disappear.
Looking forward to seeing your new combo on the water.

Around 120f is ok. Too much over that like the 150 and over range will spell trouble.

just off the top of my head...we used to run tc5's (touring cars) on carpet and had temps of 150 or 60 easy....why do these water cooleled motors need lower temps?

It's all a game of risk. You can run hot all the time if you like but one day the magnets will lose their juice and prolly smoke something. It's best to stay cooler and have a longer running system. If you stay 150 or above you will have trouble, it's just a matter of when. (especially with the less expensive chi motors)

lol the chi motors. i have been staying away from them. thank you for the input on the temps will remember that. have a temp gauge coming in this week.

Don't get me wrong chinese motors have their place and I have ran several. I have made some power mistakes in the past with too much prop/volts/whatever and at least it's a cheap mistake..........

I just purchased the castle/neu 1512, 1.5y for $60 from Castle. Also bought a seaking 180 amp esc and a water jacket. I currently have been running 4S and 5S on the stock setup, so I don't have any 6S batteries yet. How well will this setup run on 4S and 5S compared to stock?

i was hitting 34-36 on the gps with 4s on stock setup with i think its an octura x642

with this setup i have been hitting from 38-42 on gps with 4s. may try the 6s ( 2 turnigy 3s 5000mah 40c) out later today to see if i can get a little more out of her.

here is video with the 6s, 2 3s turnigy 5000mah 40c. worked great hit 54.3mpg on the gps before melting the turnigy 180. man does the boat stink now.

i have to get a handle on this voltage thing, second speed control i have melted, tired of the boats stinking.

can anyone recommend a esc for a the castle 1512 1.5y 1800kv. also i reference so i can read up on voltages amps conversions.

thanks guys.

What prop were you running to smoke that t180? Must have been big cause my k-force 150a didn't even break a sweat. Also what timing were you running?

onegreenray

i was running a octura x642. to big right?the timing is what ever the factory setting was. didn't know i needed to change it.

i was running it on the stock and it was fine as well. no idea why the esc went poop. what do you guys think would be a better esc as a replacement for the turnigy 180? was looking at hydras

Too much prop with that kind of rpm's. I was running a m440 in my setup which is alot milder. High pitch works good for a low rpm setup like the stock 1500kv on 4s but when you wind it up to 45k unloaded, smaller diameter and lower pitch works better. Buy another t180 and read up on props a little more. It's a learning game and I have smoked some speedys as well. Aslways good to start small and check temps and then work it up slowly......

i know the learning game to well, did a lot of that with my salt water fish tank.

i know i have alot of reading up to do on this stuff. thank you for the responses.

i mean the boat handles great at those speeds totally love the boat.

I agree it does handle well. Don't get discouraged, you are almost there!

blackcat,
do you think a swordfish 120 is enough for this motor? kinda cutting it close, i see steve has them in stock.

blackcat26
10-24-2010, 10:33 AM
If propped right it should be. The motor i think is rated at 80a. I still think the T-180 is a great esc. Ebay has them under Hobby Wing. Better quality IMO than the swordfish.

just going to wait till hobby king gets more in on the t180. i'll put the stock setup back in for now.

I'd think about a 240A if you are running 6S and have already burned out a 120... may cost more but you'll get more headroom

which brand do you recommend chief? there are so many out there and i haven't had the best of luck so far with turnigy? i know from past experience that you get what you pay for...
