I read an article recently that talked about a 9th island being formed off the southeast of the large island. The story goes as follows. The Hawaiian Islands are situated over a big hole in the Earth that spits out lava and forms islands or sea mounts ( those that don't reach the surface). The idea is that the Pacific Plate, which is what Hawaii sits on, is moving in a northwest fashion and has passed over this hole for a long time. If you do a google earth and drag Hawaii to the center and slowly scroll in, you can see a "chain" of sea mounts and islands extending all the way to the USSR including Midway. This 9th island has been named and this maybe a good investment for those that are into long term real estate investment as "they" say it will be 200,000 years before it breaks the surface, if at all. Plate Tectonics is some cool stuff!
