So I've noticed in a few posts members seem to be suggesting this motor. What I was wondering is, does the water-cooling jacket work with the Rios clamp mount? There seems to be a area where it looks like the clamp could fit, but that is just a guess on my part.

If it wouldn't fit, would the motor be fine without a liquid cooling jacket? I really have my eyes on this motor for my conversion.

You need motor cooling without a doubt or even a fan. You need some source of cooling.
That motor maybe too thin for the motor mount. It's only 27.6mm in diameter and a stock rio motor is 37.5mm, You maybe better off replacing the motor mount. Def would give you more options. If you don't want to replace the mount, this motor is more along the same size as the stock motor so may fit better with less mods. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=fei-540L&cat=116

Hopefully some of this helps, I never converted my RIO to brushless I use it as a rescue rig so im not sure on what works and what doesn't.
If you do go with the motor you listed this may work better since it is smaller.

I was thinkin of using a 380-xl with ose cooling can and clamping the whole thing with the motor mount. I think the O.D. of the cooling can is close enough to fit in the motor mount. Question is... will the o-rings keep the motor can from spinning inside the cooler??

I would run a feigao 540 9l 2887kv with the 1/8 shaft on 3s with a small silicon jacket. Nice set-up and prob easy to mod plus has a little more watts than the 380xl.

If it did stop it for how long until the constant torque would cause the o-rings to fail.

You might be able to spread some silicone around the edges of the cooler to help hold it in place.

That might look a little cheesy though. Never mind!
