I recently bought a Shockwave26 for it's ESC. The ESC was sold out everywhere. I took her ESC that I needed, and that was it. I decided later to put the Ammo motor in her, and she flew on her first and only run.
I traded her Steerable Outdrive to SJFE, and ordered a Jet drive to put in her. I really didn't care about this one, so I had no worries about cutting her up.

Here's what I have so far...

Epoxied the suction tube in place. Still trying to figure out the cooling pickup :confused1:

Put a pickup tube in the outlet flow. Drill a 5/32 hole in the plastic housing and use a piece of 5/32 brass tube with the end cut at maybe 10 degrees (almost squared off, it won't take much). glue the brass in so only the short angled part extends into the outlet nozzle. Now plumb it like you would a water pickup rudder.

This is going to be cool... I'll be watching and wondering if I might want to try something like this... ;)

Sorry for any typos, driving to Nags Head NC while typing. Would I get the same affect if I tap the pickup to the suction tube? that way it's all inside the hatch.

You should try it. It was very easy and honestly very fun.

I think it's going to need to be on the pressure side of the system... If it's on the suction side, it will just give one more place for the system to "suck" from...

That would suck... :D

I think if I did it... I'd have to do it with DUAL jets... Just because... ;)

Danny you couldent have picked a better hull imo. It looks to be the perfect shape. Excellent job cutting it btw. FWI that esc I sent you is beter than oem unit in the sw26. I cant wait to see this thing go. YeeHaa

The only thing that I would worry about is the jet drive picking up a rock through it,

DO you have to build a screen for it?

Diegoboy
10-05-2007, 07:01 PM
I'll be sure to steer away form any floating rocks I may find. :tt2:

Seriously. No screen. The water I run in is plenty deep enough!

Dual jets? What hull has enough room with a flat bottom?

Thanks Tom! I can't wait either. I just have to mount the motor, servo, and do the water cooling.

I just don't believe it!!

I mounted the ammo motor, servo, and electrics. Placed the batteries inside, then prepared for a tub test. I powered her up, and gave her 3/4 throttle. There was literally so much thrust that she ripped out of my hand and slammed into the front of the tub (below the faucet) and put a hairline crack in the tub. Definitely more thrust in the tub than the 37.MPH Miss bud.
Kinda nervous, maybe I should put a lesser motor in her first.
The tub is only 4 years old, and the hatch was off, so I had a good hold on her (fingers on the inside of the transom)

Show up @ the house walk in, bust through the bedroom door and promptly flip the bed upside down. Then of course jump up and down on it. After breaking a couple beds ,lamps and so on we just started dumpin the mattres. Of course now that we are all married it's not happnin much any more. So go flip his @ss outa bed man....lol

cool project, you're using the same drive that I use. Everyone keeps building mini jets, nice to see another 29mm.

the last time i checked the law of gravity wouldnt let rocks float unless your in space.

you laugh, until it does suck up a rock, which is way more common than you'd like to think. Used to happen to me, if I didnt idle out away from shore at first.

btw diego if you do ruin an impeller, I know where you can get them, I got 3 three in the mail last week, just finishing up my new stuffing tube and I'll have the jet villain out again.

I got some time in with my boat, but the leaves in the water are really screwing things up :cursing: had to bring the boat in 3 times to pick out stems. you're very lucky to have that little pond.

Turn fins would help. Do you have dual rates on your radio? Try turning them down a little and that would help with the spinouts. Id like to se some more vids of top speed. Mabe a gps run or two. Looks good in the water and comes to plane nicely!!

I think it's time to order one of the jets. I'll put some inserts in th mold a build up a DarkHorse 26 with a flat ride pad.

Can anyone coment on how durable the drives are?

Well, my graupner drive, the same as diego's, is roughly 9 yrs old or so and has been in two boats. The only thing I've replaced is impellers, which I now have a source for. Overall for a plastic drive that cost under $60, pretty reliable. Mind you also I've been running mine at over 33,000rpms, if I remember correctly the spec is for roughly 18,000rpms max.

It would be really cool to have some races. It seems jets are gaining popularity

here's my setup (villain IV hull)
That sw26 is the best hull I've seen yet for a jet, never knew they had a ride pad like that.

10-08-2007, 10:49 PM
Do you think that a jet drive would be better on rough water?

Diegoboy
10-09-2007, 07:03 AM
Quick,
That villain is nice. I can see how you would suck up a rock, The water you run in is so shallow, and you DO have to steer around rocks that jut out of the water. I fortunately don't have rapids to run in here. The shallowest pond I run in is 2-1/2 ft deep.

Steven is shipping my Turn fins today :D

Quicksilver

thanks, well, I voluntarily run in water that shallow. I do hit rocks too. :) I'm surprised you havent seen my videos.
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=quicksiler

they are good in rough water but you'll learn you have to play with the throttle. The drive does not like running dry and the boat go airborne a lot in rough water. Sounds like a jet ski, obnoxious little thing in some waves.

ace028
10-09-2007, 08:23 PM
I think that would be cool, do you think that it would have too much drag with the rear of the boat being sucked down by the jet? being a hydro it wants the rear up out of the water right? or would you have the jet to where it would lift the rear? I'm a noob so I'm not really sure, but it would be really cool though.

Twin jets would be cool also lol

Quicksilver
10-09-2007, 08:28 PM
I see where you pick up the rocks lol
lol, you'd be amazed I've run the boat probably 30 times now and only busted one impeller on that stream(I've run that stream maybe 10 times). I broke one other impeller on the smaller lake. Best part about really fast water, is big rocks. However big rocks= major repairs once and a while :w00t:

Thanks Saleens.
What do guys think about my next jet project?

I hope to use this hull (http://www.bbyracing.com/dragboats.asp)

Pretty sweet, my only concern is getting the cog right. I dont see much room in that hull, meaning, with a big jet drive in there, where's the batteries go? I could be wrong, I'd have to break out a ruler and the calculator to check. I would think in a drag hull, you'd want the cog back pretty far.

Diegoboy
10-09-2007, 09:02 PM
Quick,
What is the "cog"?
I know the following...

Suction tube
Stern tube
impeller tube
shaft
impeller
guide vane
thrust nozzle
control nozzle

I guess I still have a lot to learn too.
http://www.addemoticons.com/emoticon/animated/AddEmoticons04267.gif

Quicksilver
10-09-2007, 09:26 PM
just center of gravity. lol perhaps center of balance is what I really mean....balance front to back

here's another one Stator......the vanes behind the impeller that straighten the water into a ........jet....also is the reason you dont get prop walk...that sounds wrong but yeah no torque.

reverse bucket
variable nozzle
variable intake
cavitate......btw why does spell check always say that's wrong?

Diegoboy
10-10-2007, 05:50 AM

any GPS readings yet?

speaking of c.o.g. I'm going to try folding over my flat 8cell packs, to get the c.o.g. farther back.

oh and a tip for anyone installing a jet drive. I've realized/learned for maximum speed, you want to mount the drive as far back as possible, which means throwing out the installation instructions. The optimum place for the intake is as close to the transom as you can make it. Which will leave much of the drive hanging out the stern, but it wont cavitate as much and will decrease your wetted surface.....therefore more speed :)

I love jet drives to death. One advantage that jet drives have in my pond is that they suck up, obliterate, and eject the plant life that floats around in the water.

The same plant matter just wraps itself around the props of my Villain and my SV and puts a quick end to their performance. This was quite a surprise, because I thought that it would have worked the other way around.

AtlanticChallenger
10-15-2007, 01:48 PM
Oh, and yes, a tub is a bad place to test a jet boat, because unlike the prop models, there will be a bit of a lag in between when you hit the throttle, and when the thrust kicks due to the jet purging air from the system before receiving a solid column of water. Made that little mistake a few times myself. ;)

Of course, when your boat is almost 60 inches long, consequences can be a bit more difficult. In my case, it rammed the front of my tub, and simultaneously ejected about 3 gallons of water up out of the tub onto the floor. Incredible.

yeah I've done that exact thing before. not cool, I've yet to be able to hold on to my boat at full throttle no matter what I do, unless of course it's out of the water.

my boat just really doesnt like leaves. The stems are just too tough and end up catching on the stator.
