This is my latest FE project. was going to go twins until i saw the new turnigy outrunner and pressed buy!

It is a sprintcat .40 no hatch, I plan to make a flatish cowl with an enclosed cockpit
I have fixed a large hole in the hull by filling the hole with 3 layers of glass cloth, then one layer over the entire tunnel floor, im going to put some rails in and lay a layer of carbon down for safe keeping.

Power is going to be the Turnigy 4030 1100kv outrunner on 6s - According to Jason @ HK they outsourced the design and manufacture to the factory that makes Hacker motors, take from that what you will.
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/1901/turnigy.th.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/i/turnigy.jpg/)

ESC - Hextronic 120amp , custom watercooling

Cells - Rhino 25-35c 6s1p initially

starting prop will probably be around the m445 mark then upwards and onwards

LOTS of work to go, but thats half the fun.

If that motor's performance is anything like the Scorpion HK4025/1100, don't waste time with a 45mm prop. That's too small for the hull anyway and will hardly load the motor. I've run an x450 pitched up and pulled less than 65 amps in my SprintCat40. What capacity cells are you planning on using?

Thanks Jay, I was wondering the same thing. It more of an initial run prop to see if anything breaks.

To start with I will just be running 5000mah 25-35c 6s1p that I have. If it shows promise I will buy 2 5000mah 40c 6s1p packs and parallel for 10,000mah

What props have you found useful on your sprintcat40 with the outrunner?

Update:

I have laid another layer of glass and a layer of carbon from the transom about 200mm up the tunnel.

Tomorrow I will be cranking up the compressor and priming the outside of the hull also the carbon cylcone, According to the tracking, my motor should be delivered monday so it will be all go!

Check the tracking on my motor this morning, Delivered to the PO box, Woohoo! But it didn't come when the girls went to get the mail, walked the 50 meters to the post office and had the ladies find it for me..

Behold!

The Turnigy 600, 1100kv

the quality looks pretty damn impressive and as you turn it you can feel each pole, I counted 24 notches in a 360degree rotation does that mean its 12 pole? Who knows? One thing is for certain, this Bad Boy is a monster!

Off to the engineering shop shortly to get some alloy to make a motor mount and some stainless cap screws for mounting!

what size is the shaft?
so is this an 8s motor?

I plan to run it on 6s, with a large wheel

will the be enough rpm?

crabstick
05-16-2010, 07:40 PM
should be...

We will find out very shortly. I may have to go up to 8s, but will try 6s first - Pretty sure Fluid runs his 1100KV scorpion 4025 on 6s in his sprintcat 40 - Fluid can you confirm ?

Next question on the Agenda - Shall I run 3/16 or 1/4 flex cable ?

Fluid
05-16-2010, 10:32 PM
I run the HK4025/6 on 6S1P in my SprintCat, spinning an x455. It is a little faster on an x557, but less run time.

For 6S the 3/16" cable is plenty; for 8S it will work if you don't run too high power a system or large diameter props. A club member runs a 3/16" cable on a mild 10S mono setup, props no larger than x450. It seems reliable......

Thanks for the reply Jay, 3/16 it is!!

Just off to the engineering shop to see if I can find some alloy thick enough to put a water jacket in, but will still leave me plenty of shaft lenght.

Made the engine mount tonight, 30X10mm alloy, fitted the motor to it with 4mm stainless cap screws , have pilot drilled it vertically for water cooling and also recessed the coupler into the mount, Just drilling the rails for the mount and drilling and tapping of the mount to go and then its onto glassing the rails in.

This NW weather we have is good to run at the Quarry.

I had a yarn to Kim today about you and she told me all sorts of things......just kidding.

When you have that OR powered beast up and running give me a call and we can meet at the Quarry and see how it runs. I am confident now that it will slap my cat !

Gotta make it strong, with the new wall around the pond the way the cross chop bounces off the walls as opposed to the banks and a few boats in race water or open water it can really chop up, the skeg strut helps also cats track nicely.

I try not to run without a rescue dinghy after loosing a classic shovel with about $800 tied up in it for 2 years at hakanoa, so not so sure on Pupuke. At least wattle I can wade in there.

Strut is now mounted

To find out how many poles the motor has, take the can off and count the number of loops in the wire.

Most high rpm outrunners of this size have at least 24-36 stator slots, but you can wing multiple slots into one phase. Not quite as efficient as a purpose-built stator, but loads cheaper. If you want higher rpm and more poles, you can rewind the motor with thicker wire going around only one stator tooth at a time (what's normally done). You'll need to find magnet wire that's around 16-14Ga though. Or use multiple strands of smaller wires like scorpion does. This is VERY difficult for a first-time-winder though. RCGroups has a lot of info about rewinding motors.

EDIT>> One guy in the HK discussion board says 8 poles. Seems about right...

j.m.
06-03-2010, 02:02 PM
It sounded like the can spun pretty easily once the throttle was off. Probably because the can has such a high mass compared to a regular inrunner's rotor. The sound of the magnets is awesome though... Sounds much bigger than it is.

Xfactor
06-03-2010, 07:33 PM
even if the mass was the same the outrunners mass is so far from the center of rotation changes in the outrunners acceleration require more to start and more to stop. In my opinion the only have more torque in terms of inertail energy but they require more to get there. I think the tru differnce in motors is the weight of the rotors versus the magnetic force created by the windings and magnets.

Xfactor
06-03-2010, 07:36 PM
I think the outrunners sucess lies in it simple mechanical design and all the poles they have. Theres just less gap between the magnet pulls on the rotor from pole to pole; plus theyre open where they can breathe. The only reason i feel that some of that torque is negated because the mass is so far out from the center of rotation so everytime you change the acceleration it works harder than an inrunner. I just think the good outweighs the bad in an outrunner. At any given steady rpm an outrunner probably has more torque but with a varying rpm i think the inrunner will win. I think a outrunner may be a better saw motor. In inrunner a better race motor. Just my thoughts.

X

j.m.
06-03-2010, 09:02 PM
Just like your idea about the mass being far away from the center, so are the magnets and stator coils.

An outrunner will always have more toque than an inrunner of the same Kv, outside diameter, and stator length.

Ended up removing my alloy cross braces in favor of the carbon wall, it runs from rail to rail. Found with the batts up there and the servo,rx batt and rx sitting at the back i had the best COG and the best range of adjustment. As it sits now its exactly on 33%

just waiting for some glue on the cowl to set and hope to glass it tonight.

Want this to be a good rough water electric boat.. might race it with the .45 nitro's possibly. Think the skeg will help in race water. I have a speedmaster non skeg strut to try if i need to. Not gonna hack up my nice skeg strut

So that is the Hex 120 ESC with the USB programmer? If so, are you able to run a pistol radio with it or not? I like the new USB prgrammer with them but figure they only work with stick radios.

Nice job! I think we are all getting very excited about the OR possibilities! She is singing for sure! How do you beat that for the money?

Cheers Jeff, I have just primed the hatch and put it in the server room to dry, it will get a sand and another couple coats of primer then a dash of silver, hopefully the weather is better tomorrow than today for a test

I know how you feel tryng to get a nice wide cowl and then get a good tape down lip too.
It looks good and that OR sounds very nice too.

When it is ready bring it up to the Quarry and I'll hold the camera for ya !

The "idea" I have for my big cat may now include OR's based on the sound of yours

well i got to run the cat today. I must say Jay was spot on with the props, Its going to need some big props to load this sucker up. the 447 it was silly, about 30mph, I had angled the strut down in anticipation of rough weather but its wasn't too bad, so it came back to neutral after the first run, the x 450 about 35, and x452/3 it came alive a bit and was doing about 42-44mph I tried a 1640 but with all that lift it just buried the nose after that we ran out of suitable props as Jason forgot his other prop box, So I thought id call it a successful test with no water in the boat and no breakages. In general its running a bit wet, but I can bring the strut up and move the COG back a wee bit to loosen it up.

I think im going to need a prather 240 - 245 to really get the motor loaded, May look at an x455 too. I love buying props, sharpening and balancing not so much

No video as I left the camera sitting next to the charger

Will get a video next weekend for you guys, Got to get some props this week as it was pretty unimpressive with the small props.

Thanks Rumdog, lots more sanding to do on it yet to get a smooth finish, might make a mould from it actually.. The blue windscreen was tape with black marker pen for the black bits

few more pics, running very wet as you can see :

Cheers dude,

Unfortunately no, They aren't available locally in New Zealand, its takes ages/costs a fair bit to ship stuff from the USA so by the time I got them shipped I could have just bought a couple of copper/stainless ones.

Found a prather 240, but I don't think its quite big enough and 245 looks to be a tad too big..

Off home now! laters!

Hurrah, got a decent sized wheel for the Sprintcat today, Biggest prop ive ever put on an electric boat

Behold - Prather 240... Its meant to be about 53mm, but as you can see its a tad under 55mm

Yeah for sure, and my dremel just poo'ed its pants, think the bearings are gone as the rpm's slow down and she gets hot. Bonus is stainless is nice n hard once sharpened. I forgot how nice the casting was on prather props compared to octura though.

I know how it is with the weather !
Out of interest as far as the OR motor is concerned do you have any major torque roll issues on take off ?
I know that the sprint cat is wider in aspect ratio to my hull but my little cats that have OR motors are a bastwad to take off with due to torque roll.

In all fairness the 9Xl (before it died) would nearly roll the bigger cat on takeoff.

I am just curious how yours goes.

Going to test tomorrow at wattle, Got this boat, the N2 Shovel and my Gas cat to take to the pond and do some testing, have just made some mods to the N2 and Gas boat along with this boat has got a new bigger prop and strut height and angle. should be a fun test day

I have not noticed any torque roll on take off, though the boat is fairly wide like you say and also pretty long.

weather was very windy, and no so good, but i got a wee run before I Blew a lipo! I think these cells must have been on the way out for a little bit.. I wondered why one cell took longer to charge last night, i just thought there was a dodgy connection on the balance plug

Cheers, Yeah the rest of the lake was real bad, the gas boats took a few dunks also.
Its still not really performing how id like it to, hopefully some new lipos will change that, last time I ran the exploded packs was in my whip on 6s a while ago and it seemed a tad lazy then..
My Birthday next week and the Wife is letting me buy Lipos :tongue_smilie:, I need some for my P setups and for this cat..

Going to try go for 6s2p around 10000mah..

Finally got some time to run my new 45-90c Nano Tech cells, Looks like ive still got a bit more prop to go.. this was Propshop 5017. Big quicker and looser than the Prather 240. batteries were just above cold, motor was warm. Had a prior run with teh 240 a min before this.

finally put the 1400KV T600 outrunner in the boat and gave it a test run yesterday. I ran the m447 and after about 3 mins of loading and unloading (in the sea which was a bit choppy), full throttle / part throttle run everything was medium warm. Speedwise it was faster than with the propshop 5017, so Im looking forward to some calmer water and working my way up in props! fun times!
