I have sued caustic soda in water, but make sure you do it outside, i thought i could get away with inside but with good ventilation over winter but after a short length of time i ran into the garden coughing and breathing with extreme difficulty, not recommended.

I have used "Easy Off " oven cleaner with quite a bit of sucess. First wash the parts with soap and water to remove oils that may be present, then sand them a bit with 220 grit sand paper to open the pores and spray the cleaner on them let soak for a while then rinse them if you need to repeat try scrubbing the parts with oven cleaner and 00 steel wool and wear gloves and safety glasses while scrubbing the oven cleaner. Once you get the parts clean you can sand them with 1000 grit sand paper and water then polish them if desired.

Oven cleaner. It will oxidize the aluminum but it will polish out.

Oh nuts you beat me to it.
