Heres some pics of my winter project. Our MMEU club runs SPORT 40 (any hull per NAMBA SP40 rules Any Motor up to 6S lipo). I decided to scratch build a one-off 35" Sport Hydro based on a lo-pro Whip style design. The hull will be built similiar to a rigger with a composite tub & replaceable sponsons.

SPECS:

TUB~ 26"L x 10"W @ beam tapered back to 8" W transom. 1/8" Ply frames skinned with .046 G10 sheet, G10 Strut wetwell

SPONSONS~ BBY SP40(Winston) Glass Molded w/G10 inside closeouts

CANOPY~ ABS modified DUMAS tunnel

POWER~ARC 36-75-1 1680kv, 6S1P 40C lipo, Huaya BX200 ESC

HARDWARE~ 3/16 Flex/Stub, Speedmaster Strut (thru hull mtg)MACH 5 Cleaver rudder, HS645mg steering servo

Heres some pics with the deck on, Canopy mockup, and sponson assembly. The sponsons are fastened with 1/4" SS bolts, sealed blindnuts bonded on the G-10 closeout panels.

Modified DUMAS Tunnel Canopy will be mounted separately from the hatch(minus canopy / rigger classes).

Next step will be cutting the hatch opening, and fitting, motor, hardware, coming soon.........

This is really thinking outside the box. Looks cool. If you want a FG cowl I make a hooters.

Great job Ken. May I ask why the removable sponsons? Will they be adjustable?

Thanks guys for the nice comments. I hope to get some vids of all my high speed stuff running this year. Just got a new mini cam.

STEVE i wanted to make the sponsons replaceable just in case....Boats in this class really move. They are dialed in right now for a preset AOA. If i need to adjust them i have the option within a few degrees.

Defiantly outside of the box Ken… Will this one get the outrunner treatment too?

Hey Mike i have a special inrunner for this one. Will see how it works out.......

WOW, Ken nice work and a great thought process!!! What sort of weight are you aiming for?

very sweet indeed, but as usual i have a stupid question, how do you remove and adjust sponsons i see bolts on the side can you get to these threw the hatch opening ?

Thanks again for the nice comments, i'm shooting for a RTR of 9-10lbs(G10 is incredibly strong but heavy). Once i cut out the hatch opening(this weekend) theres plenty of access to the sponson attachments. The sponson bolt heads nest on the inside of the 5" tub stringers. Hatch opening scribe lines are on deck pic#5.

Its been a while but i have progressed. The hull has been completely assembled and custom hardware installed. Heres the latest pics, next step it will be torn down for priming and finish paint.

Driveline has been offset 1/4" to counter act prop torque. Strut `Wet Well' is sealed off from the rest of the hull.

What kind of adhesive are you using to secure the G10 sheeting? Very inventive use of unique materials! OUTSTANDING!

Thanks guys its been a fun winter project. Can't wait to throw it in some water!

For bonding G10 (compression molded epoxy sheet) this stuff works the best. Takes a little while to get used to smell. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001REZC6U/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000ALBZK8&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0V5K3DQTWAXD9HDTK1S8

Great first run with the `NEW' ARC 36-75-1 hit 50mph(GPS) on 6S 40C Turnigy cells, Huaya BX200 ESC. Had to take it easy windy day, 3-4" chop! Should work fine for our club racing class. Brought in after 6 laps motor temp only 110F w/cooling jacket. That little motor puts out some impressive power!

Hi Ken

Nice build, I really like the inboard strut mount and the "wet well"

are you keen to tell us what motor are you running ?

So is this hull about the same size and weight as a Whip40?

K.R.Joye
06-11-2010, 07:41 AM
I think the Whip 40 is 37" this one is 35". Long story short i needed to keep the overall length to 35"(min for SP40 IMPBA NAMBA) in order to keep the after plane below 60% per NAMBA sprort hydro rules. The sponsons are little longer on the Whip 40. My hull weighs close to 11 lbs RTR, i added some wedge(more AOA)to the sponson ride pads so the boat runs very light.

I'm using `NEW' ARC 36-75-1 EDF motor exclusively designed & sold by LIGHTFLIGHT Big Power/Small package. The motor design uses C-Clips at each bearing shaft end & heavy duty bearings, can handle up to 8S/150 amps. Currently playing with various pitch props in the 45mm range, when i find the right prop i'll get some vid.

The motor sounds decent!

It will be interesting to hear how that ARC motor holds up. They make some pretty strong claims for it.

So Far So Good! Hit 58.3(GPS) today with a cut-down M447(45mm) in light chop, Motor temps in the 135F range. Real pleased. :thumbup1:

How did the racing go this year with this new boat?

K.R.Joye
10-06-2010, 08:24 AM
Randy once i got the afterplane length figured out it ran really good. The sponsons were a little to short for a 37" in hull so now its a 35" hull. The longer hulls seem to be better at high speeds in traffic.

I have an old AC SP40 (37") that needs some work. I'm going to fix it up in the off season with a NEU/Castle 1717(6S1P) then compare both boats in the spring.

I pulled up the chair and microwaved the popcorn... nice thread... I too saw those ARC motors a couple of years back... been contemplating getting one since... never needed one so far and/or forgot about it.

Nice job Ken. I think we may have met earlier this year. Are you still running out at Shelby?

I have only tried my ARC 36-65-1 2080Kv motor for 1.5 minutes and it has little to sweat about with a 45mm high pitch (wrong prop) on it.

I'm trying a m447 next in my Whip .21 I should have more to say by Sunday night after our last club run.

The windings are MUCHO thick wire compared to any inrunner I have seen so far and all packed into a very tight package.

I just might build a Whip 40 and put one of these 3675-1,s in it.

Sweet ride Ken!! Beauty work EH!

Hey howard hope your recovery is going ok, your smart grabbing a 40 Whip, i'm still in a big learning curve with my hull. We should have plenty of competition for you next season.
