Is anyone out there running an upgraded motor? If so, any feedback would be great.

what are you looking for?

FEJohn

Something that puts out more power, I wanna keep the same esc tho if I can do that. Sorry it's a vage answer I just wanna know what my options are. Thanks!

More power?
are you looking for more speed?
these boats can do low 50s with the stock motor and esc

FEJohn

More speed, I want to safely run 2 3cell lipos without the motor or esc overheating. Do you know what a good set-up would be for this?

Thanks for your help,
John

Well first, how fast are you now?
if your only in the 40s like most are, then work on the setup to get the boat to the 50s..
What packs are your using? nimh or lipo and what size?
alot of new boaters want more speed but yet can't get the stock setup maxed out yet..
the stock esc and motor will take 5s with care..
I'm looking to try 5s this summer, like someone on here has done with great results!
I can get 52-53mph on my UL-1 running 4s, so 60mph on 5s should be doable
If you want more than 60mph look towards another hydro as this one would be close to maxed out at low 60s

What prop are you using to get into the 50s on stock power and 4s?

I used Grimracer's L40 x 57/3 prop and water conditions were smooth with slight wind ripple on top.

I will have to order that prop and get it sharpened & balanced. Right now I run a x440 and I like it, but my boat runs low 40s. Not sure if that is average speed for that prop on that boat or not. I'm still learning how to set up boats correctly.

Another question I have and this is a true noob question, but please bare with me I have only been in this hobby for less than 4 months, but how and with what do you measure the strut depth and angle? Like I said please bare with me, but if I don't ask I'll never know.

Grimracer

diesel,

I use a digital level and a solid rod protruding from the strut to measure the shaft angle.

To set the height I measure from the bottom transom of the boat to the work table below.

All measurements are taken with the boat resting on all three ride points.

I hope to be able to provide you with info on the boat soon but we still have a long way to go.

Lets see if I can find a pic for ya.. this is "Close" to the radio setup.. THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS in FE RTRs...

I am using 5400 30c lipos, The boat set-up is still stock. I do have the Grimracer L40 x 57/3 prop that I still gotta balance and sharpen. What set-up do you use too achieve the 52-53 mph range?

I do like the Gas KOS because its a gasser, but for racing I would not want to go that direction because of the narrow hull..
I'm selling it to get a gas Hydro that my club is making bigger this season! :rockon2:

So just for conversation & if I ever do decide to change motor/esc what would be the upgrade motor/esc of choice. Would a ammo 2600kv work with the stock esc? Would it be better to go with a 7xl,8xl,9xl etc... and if so what esc? Just throwing things out their for the sake of conversation & the orginal question wasn't truly answered...

Rumdog
02-04-2010, 09:04 PM
Ammo 2600 is too high kv for 4s. My Ul-1 coulsn't handle the power of the 8xl. Lots of chine walking! The ammo 2300 may be an option. IMO the stock motor is plenty for this boat though. Maybe upgrade to a 120 amp esc and try propping up a tad.

I agree that stock power is enough. My goal is to push the stock setup fast as I can 50+ hopefully, but after that... plus I want to use my ul setup in my sv which gives me a reason (or explanation to the wife) to buy a new motor/esc...

I've got a Fieago 7XL, 2370KV with Etti 150 and Grim 57/3 in the UL1 and it runs like a charm. But IMO, the Nue 1515Y with Woltz .078" wire drive, M440 and the CC240 is the way to go. We run consistant 48-50mph (data logged) on two other stock UL1's and the two setups above pass them like they are standing still! Just have to make some lead adapters this winter for the EagleTree ( deans ultra to 5.5 bullet) and see if I can fry an Eagle Tree on a Nue1515

I would also like to try this motor as well. Is a 120a esc enough for this motor and maybe 5 or 6s? I really don't want to shell out the $$$ on a etti I rather buy like a turnigy marine 120a if it would work well in this application.

Off subject, but.....I once got a set of 300A CT's shipped to me instead of some guy who ordered them from Norway...Called EagleTree and got them off to the guy..but I then started wondering that when you exceed the ELoggers amp range (I think its 100A) if you couldn't buy these CT expanders for the hotter setups instead of frying the logger. Plus, I think it stinks that they have the deans connector built in to them, limiting the current..I made some 5.5 to deans adapter jumpers, but still feel that I'm probabbly gonna cook something..That's why I'm afraid to use them in the Nue/Fieago...thats alright, the only thing we have up here in new england is block ice and snow...

yes, the rpm is getting very high on anything over 4s.

I fit that esc into a vacu-pickle, but it was a tight fit. It is probably too tall for the ul-1.

Good to know, this will probalby be a new motor/esc combo for my ul-1. I just read about the new venom boats 2 seconds ago so new ul-1 power is going to have to wait. I just got a grim 40x57/3 and strut depth is set to 1" so soon as weather breaks I can test it this setup then work on strut adjustment. Looking forward to it.

Thanks and does it come with new bolts or use the old ones? Their are a few other things I need to do to the ul and also gotta wait for weather to clear and it will be ready to go. I am currently hitting high 40s (46-47) close to 50 but can't get over the hump. I honestly think the boat will do over 50 with my setup, but I don't have the best gps (kinda big) and I think it is weighing me down due to the size of it. Yes i have, when I ordered the boat the 4500 30c where the first batteries I got with it which have several runs on them. The 5000 30c I just got and they only have 2 runs on them and work wonderfully temps where good on both sets of batteries. I just switched the stock esc to 5.5mm bullets.
