They all have different pitch angles on the blades. X series have alot of pitch so it is a lifting prop, the back of the boat may hop or bounce. The Y series prop has less lift and a more stable and sport set-up. The more pitch angle a prop has the more of a load it puts on the motor and the amps it will draw from the lipos. Its just like tire on a car you have to find the right size for it to run good. It depends on alot of factors, like what kind of boat, is it for sport or competition, what speeds you want and so on.

hmmm X series are general purpose type props low lift
the first number gives you its pitch eg x440 is 1.4" pitch or a x640 is 1.6" pitch the X does not denote it as a high pitch prop
Y is the same as an X series but has 1.5" pitch
M series is the same as the X but has the tounge removed from the front of the prop
X and Y series props can have the tounge removed and then become basicly a M seris type prop.
