Difference in a X and Y series prop

It looks like the tongue is longer on the Y series prop. This is just the opposite from the M series, that has a shorter tongue than the X. Can someone explain what performance difference you should expect to see from a longer and shorter prop tongue?

Tom has told me repeatedly that the only difference between the X and Y props is an additional 10% more pitch on the Y....blades are the same. You can expect a bit more speed with the Y and a bit more lift....usually. I find the M545 gives slightly more speed than the M645 on my LSH; the M545 is a Y545 without the tongue.

The tongue is lower pitched than the rest of the blade, and it hleps the boat to get up on plane. I have no problem getting any of my boats on plane and remove the tongue on all my X and Y props - I prefer to buy M series from the start if I can. You will usually see a bit more speed from a prop with no tongue.

      Tongue

The longer tongue helps accelerating out of the hole and a shorter tongue will get a higher top speed. Thanks!

The previous picture was an optical illusion. I layed the props on top of each other and Fluid is correct, no difference. A Y537 prop is really a X537. So why didn't they just name them X437, X537 and X637 props. It would be a lot less confusing. Y? Y? Hmmmm.......
How big is the guy that did that? I am looking for him. J/K

I still wonder what he was thinking when he named it Y.

Here's a pic of an X645 (on your left) and an M645. The M series has the tongue cut down.

                X-M props

Here is another picture of the M and X series props. X is on the bottom. You can see the difference, it is not alot.

They are both factory Octura M and X 447 props.

Does anyone remove more tongue than that? And what will be the effect?
