    Thrust bearing install

    Update on 07-18-08
Link to Geeves step by step thrust bearing install, take it or leave it

I tried to intall a thrust bearing on my stock sv brushless. Then motor has too much shaft what can i do? If i cut it do I need to put another keyway in the motor shaft. How perfect of a cut do i need can i just use a dremmel?

    Thanks

You can shorten the shaft and extend the flat with a Dremmel quite easily, just make sure you don't get any filings in the motor, but you could just add a second thrust bearing instead.

Both ways would work, but it would be ideal to shorten the shaft and re-key.

Now, since you have the ability to shorten the shaft, if you measure carefully you can set the shaft lenght and keyway in such a way that the coupler will have the exact .005" gap and not be able to slide down. This may be hard to do but you can do it, I have. Just take time on the filing of the keyway. Remember the thrust bearing needs to have about a .005" (paper space) play between the motor and the coupler.

        Yes a dremel would work.

Make sure that piece that is between the thrust bearing and the coupler stays put with the coupler or it will defeat the purpose/function of the thrust bearing.

Let us know how it works!

well I will never know if I don't ask. What purpose does the bearing serve on the motor shaft? The shaft already has a bearing where it exits the motor can. Isn't that enough?

Basically its reduces the load on the motor, causing less heat and ?longer life?
Some people argue this because electric motors have come a long way from the 1st rc boats. But for $7.00 and a few nights of screwing around with the sv what harm could come of it.

Search the OSE thread, put in "Thrust Bearing"
