First Build Need Help with desgning a Catamaran

    Hey Guys,

I have been doing a lot of reading here. I am an RC dirt oval racer in NY for four years. All lipo stuff. There are alot of differences between boating an cars.. firstly ESC's are all sensored and the motors all have dynamic timing. So I am learning all the time.

Okay here is the challenge... My two friends own and race a 32' Douglas Skater with twin full blown drag motors... one is the throttleman and one is the driver. It's a very fast boat 180 mph+ . Picture of "The King Sting" below

I would like to build a scale model fast electric verion of this boat... I have a nice Futaba 2.4 radio and receiver as well as a futaba servo.. my packs for the cars are only 2s1p 28c 3200mah. I dont think the packs are big enough to use for the boat.. Not counting batteries I didn't want to spend over $500.00 not counting batteries or finish. (if need be I could spend more)

I have read about alot of guys losing the boats in the water after crashing so I would like this boat to be very stable. Yet I want it to be fast (like the real one)

I will be hauling the real boat to a big shootout for them this August in MO.. I would like to bring my "Mini King Sting" there to Surprise them with it. There is also a RC shootout that same week and I would like to enter.

A couple of points to note:

    SCALE? 1:10 or larger
Easy to drive at fast speeds
Ease of use, thats why I wanted electric.. I have a Pulsar two charger for the cars
    White base color?

I was looking @ the Venom EKOS C1 twin (not great reviews) and already finished paint?

The real boat is an open cockpit... I havent seen one cat Hull with an open cockpit, so I know that may be the only thing that doesn't look real.

The only other hull I saw that I saw was @ R hobbies 36" cat.. the running gear and lokks okay but the props are both turning the same way.. looks like it's made in China... Any one know if they are any good.. I thought longer would be safer in rough Water..

I build stuff.. mount motors etc.. but it just seems easier to have an ARR model then add motors batts esc's and radio etc.

So there it is... anyone got any advice.. I am willing to post pics in the build section when I start.

The real key here is it's gotta match the look of the real thing.

    Thanks in advance

    Jay

the r hobbies are chinese and not built too well, theyre kinda flimsy. bigger hulls perform better in chop, not longer. longer hulls go great in a straight line, but dont turn well. wider hulls like the mean machine both handle well and go fast. i dont think you'll find an open canopy cat, ive never seen one, but maybe you could just fabricate your own

      Dana,

Thanks for the info.. so it's like a pontiac gran prix wider is better for stability.

I figured I would have to go with the closed canopy look.. so the mean machine that OSE sells is 29" long. Would that be a 1:10 scale with a 32' boat? it looks solid and they sell it in white..

alot of variables out there want to go with a proven setup for lipos, BL etc..

I saw some set up info from Fluid on one of those that did 60Mph that would be cool.. the boat was set up with nimh batts though. An yone got a good setup for the MM cat hull

Almost forgot. I have zero intrest in fabbing the hull.. no skill in that area.. it would not turn out well.. easier to buy one..

      Thanks,

      Jay

      Thanks,

      Jay

Ive never seen a Skater type rc hull, but there are the Mystic types made very very well.HPR is worth looking at.A friend has a 115cm twin drive cat that runs in the 80's and stable as can be.If your going to run in the shoot out,you better get a long hull. The 115cm is 45" in length. That would be the minimum length Id get for the competition. The HPR's are made for speed. They do cost a bit,but they are one of the best made cat hulls out there. They come in a plain solid white gel coat, ready for what ever you want to do.

It would need paint but the Aquacraft Motley Crew is a scale model of a Skater 326, already comes with good stuff but it's not a twin.
I enquired and the graphics are cleared over decals, I would like this hull but not with that butt ugly scheme!
I believe they are still built in China but Aquacraft has some quality control and stand behind their products, they are also designed by racers, so they handle pretty good for RTR products. This one will be released in about a month I think.
2s 5000mah packs would be the ticket for one of these, 20c would work but the higher the better, boats are real amp hogs!
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

What do you think of this hull? Looks like it could be painted to look like your friends much easier than a king of shaves...

How about a miss geico from pro boat and just paint to match?

The Proboat Thundercat looks quite a bit like the full size boat in your photos

Wow Larry, those are the nicest FE I have seen so far.. def. out of my price range..

does the rc shootout @lotozarks have different classes? That part of my plan may be out of my reach $$$ 45" is an offshore hull? The 32 skater is def not an offshore hull more like a lake rocket.. gonna try to go with the same principle here short and stable but alot of power so far the mean machine hull @ ose is the cheapest $155.00 only 29" .. lots of time hear to discuss.. thanks again so much for all of your ideas and comments

Looks the closest so far $225.00 for the hull any idea on a good twin setup for this hull?
