My 2010 Winter builds

Enclosed are some pics of my 2010 winter builds.

First is a 29 Titan (BLUE) I am building for my youngest son. I bought the hull used here on the swap shop. So far I have cleaned out all the old epoxy and added a new layer of CF cloth on the inside to pretty it up and stiffen the hull a bit more. I'm planning on 4s2p 10XL power for her like I have in my other sons Mean Machine. It should be a nice reliable 40 mph boat for him to learn on. Should also be a competitive boat in novice class for him in a year or two. He wanted his boat to look like the Dinoco car from the movie "Cars". So thats what I did for him. I'll be hanging the hardware off the transom next.

Second boat is my "I'm going to the dark side" Sniper. She'll run in stock gas in addition to my FE's in D12 next year. I bought the hull from Steve and she does not have stringers yet. Pete Zicha was nice enough to send me some stencils of the stringers in his Sniper and I should be installing some in the next few weeks. As you can see I cut out all the vent to let fresh air in, I added an extra layer of fiberglass to the back half of the lid to strengthen her and epoxied and fiberglassed the scoops in. She has all Speedmaster hardware and will sport a RCMK Evo gas motor.

All graphics were done by Performance Graphix of Virginia. The "Delta Force" lettering and scope cross hairs are done in reflective mylar. Performance Graphix does both cut vinyl and printed vinyl. I was very hesitant of getting some of the work in printed vinyl but, with this technique you can do very complex graphics easily. They still apply like vinyl and appear to be just as durable with out having to clear coat. Jimmy is a very easy guy to work with and I highly recommend him!

Finally got the stringers in the Sniper this past week. Not quite as pretty as a factory job but I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. I made the fore and aft ends a little taller. I also ran a bead of epoxy at the bottom of the stringers. I got this stuff from a friend who does bad a$$ model rockets. The type that breaks the spead of sound and you have to get the FAA to block airspace to launch. Anyhow he said the stuff is 10-15 times stronger than the stuff you get at the hardware store. Thanks again to Peter Zicha for your help with the stencil!!!

Well, we go a big snow dump all day yesterday in the mid-atlantic so the testn'tunes are done for a few months. Dispite the holiday madness, I managed to squeeze a little work on the boats over the last few weeks.

The Dinoco boat was used and little rough on the interior so I ripped out the old stuffing tube, ground down (choke,gag) the old JB Weld and added some CF to freshen it up. As you can see,I added the Vacuboat motor mount, rudder servo, receiver and my plywood ESC and receiver battery tray. All I need is the motor and I can mount the stuffing tube. On the exterior, I need to add the turn fins and a receiver switch. The hull was in nice shape but lots of holes, so I did what I could to cover as up as many as possible. One thing I did was use the Fine Design hardware which the boat was already drilled for.

On the Sniper gas boat I got a radio box, T-bar for the stuffing tube, motor mounts and a mount for a "IV" type gas bag. Everything is dummied in. All I need is the motor and I can start bolting all the interior componants up and get the stuffing tube in. This boat it going to run in the Stock Gas class and the Zenoah 260 motor will cost me less than a new CC hydra 240. Thats why I'm going gas on a big boat!!!

One Down, Two to go.................

Finally finished my younger sons Titan 29 this evening. I hit some minor snags but I think it came out pretty good. I added some RCMK water outlets for a little bling. Looks like dual exhaust. I gave her a little bench test and she seems to be working fine. As soon as the ponds thaw out, we'll take her for a spin.

Now I can concentrate on my gas boat.

More work complete on the gas boat. I installed the motor, stuffing tube and T-bar. I notched out the stringers for the carb and exhaust pipe with a dremel tool. I also did a few small cuts into the cowl opening for the radio box and the carb. The only thing left to cut 'n drill for is the mount for the IV bag fuel tank(yes, IV Bag) and the radio box. After thats done, she'll be ready for final assembly.

Gas bag mount and IV bag are now installed as is the radio box with all the electrical stuff. Doing these gas boats is not that much harder than an electrical boat, but there is a bit more tedious little BS things that can go wrong and take up allot of time. I just need a few more little things. Plus an exhaust system and a gas can/pump to fuel this puppy up and she will be ready to go. Then I can start on my first rigger, the JAE21FE.

Thanks guys. Doug I may take you up on that builder. As you know, I'm just going to run stock this year but maybe next year I'll play with the big boys. Do you all run stock mono in D13? If so do you have your own rules like we do? We allow turned down pistons, any carb and any tuned pipe.

Well, I'm finally done with the gas Sniper. Just a few more little tweaks needed. I ran into lots of little snags like how to mount the magnets for the cowl. Getting the linkage perfect and relocating the coil. Definately more tedious than building an electric boat. Still it was a fun build and I learned allot.
