Instead of soldering this ETTI capacitor board to main power wires, I thought about doing it slightly different way. I soldered it directly to power FET board using four 16 gauge silicon wires per board. I decided to use this thin wire to reduce skin effect losses. I think the outcome is cleaner install and preserved usability of controller's battery wires that are already too short.

Just curious on why 4 wires? I would think 1 large or even two smaller ones would be sufficient.Boats:

This extra capacitor bank is definitely helping out. We ran it for few laps and temperature of original caps was noticeably less than before. The setup is Mean Machine cat with Neu 1521 1Y (1577Kv) on 6S LiPo (6Ah 25C) running X442 prop at 140 - 160 A full speed. The ripple was so bad that 5V regulator chip feeding Hydra's micro computer got so hot that it cracked a hole through the shrink wrap.
I recommend extra caps to anyone running maxed out setups or just as cheap insurance for your ESC. Make sure to use 1 ohm 5W resistor to pre-charge all these caps before connecting batteries to avoid big spark.Comment

More capacitors will cause bigger "pop" or spark when connecting second power connector between ESC and battery. Resistor reduces very high inrush current caused by charging capacitors, and eliminates that spark.

Extra caps can be used on any ESC, just make sure their voltage rating matches voltage rating of capacitors on your ESC.Last edited by AntronX; 03-23-2009, 12:13 AM.Comment
