The Funtastic FasTech - let the mods begin

Just got this yesterday and I guess its obvious the wife is out of town... ate dinner at 12:30 this morning after a long haul in the shop.

Opened the box and was pleased to find extra parts, thanks Lipo Power! also a receiver that binded with my transmitter instantly.

So, ever since I saw Diegoboy's jet drive Fastech I have never quit thinking about WHEN I would make such a craft. I thought that since that won't happen for a while, might as well get this thing to run as good as I can.

First impressions of "out of the box"

    1) I didn't feel the cable spun as freely as I like
    2) battery placement was absurdly restricted to the "battery tray"
    3) I have seen Dad's fastech porpoise and do his famous endo... want to nip that before it happens.

I have always thought the prop needed to be farther from the transom... so with the help of some aluminum angle brackets, band saw, drill press and a nice assortment of SS screws/nuts, all the sizes of K&S tubing and an empty house, I got to work.

Here are some pics of the insides. I removed the servo/rx/esc tray and trimmed back the rails that stepped out and impeded moving the batts back. Then I trimmed a piece of Plexiglas to the size I needed and slapped her in.

Compare with the before pic - 5th in the line below.

    Then for the drive line.
I dug in my parts bin and came up with a couple pieces of 1/16" thickness aluminum angle and made me a strut bracket that stood the prop back another inch or so. I had a strut layin around and now you see the result. I had to extend the stuffing tube out and install a new liner that went all the way to the strut. I also added some shrink wrap to smooth out the joints. I used red loctite again to hold the K&S together at the joints. Fortunately, since I extended the length from motor to prop, I happened to have some .150 cable and a 3/16" stub and some red loctite and a dremel - wallah a new flex drive.

I will try to get out today, but dad is on his way to visit and I may wait for him... Anyway here is the before run (and no I didn't hit any ducks this time either):

For the time being, yes. I have only blown the ESC on 6S with high timing - and talk about doing it with a bang... 5S though and a small prop is ok (for my running - not promoting it to anybody not willing to smoke the esc). I do have a himodel 125A 2-7S ESC that I might use to see what she can do on 6S. Other than that, 4S is totally safe. 5S is kinda safe if you don't prop up too much. But anything above 4S should probably disable internal BEC and use a rx pack.

What and how much do you gain by extending the prop?

Must have been vid angle, it was at least 20% faster on 5S. Will post better vids.

I haven't tried new prop extension, but I am hoping to gain stability in rougher water (no endos) and the added adjustibility of strut depth/angle. Can't wait to try it.
