Alan's Baby Oil cooled SeaKing 180, 6S in his Red Mono

After destroying several SeaKing 180s on a 6S set up for his red Mono, Alan devised a baby oil cooling set up in addition to conventional water cooling. He also used a BEC and it worked. First run the prop was a bit too small but with a larger prop, on the second run, it ran......smokeless!

(He was not so lucky with his brand new yellow Mean Machine. He was so excited to run his new build he did not put in any flotation or tape the hatch. Ran incredible...till it flipped. Sank to the bottom in less than 30 seconds with a big BURP (LiPos?) where Davy Jones now watches over it. Hope to recover it soon.)

Mineral oil is the same thing as baby oil, but without the smell.

          Hey Joe,

Glad to see someone used your idea of immersing the ESC in oil and it worked well.
Was the baby oil cooled by the water lines as well, or just the ESC?
I could see using two water intake lines, one for cooling the ESC and motor and one for cooling the baby oil using some kind of cooling coil.
How much weight do you guess was added with the addition of the container and baby oil? You might be able to get away with using less baby oil in a smaller container, if you can cool it. Even better if you could circulate the oil in the container.
          Just a thought.
Another plus with this setup is you don't have to worry about getting the ESC wet since it is covered in oil. This looks like a good thing to try with the cheap chinese multi-layered aircraft ESCs that are tough to cool.

Let me know if you guys plan on running there again anytime soon....

          Have a Happy New year....

So what were the temps like on the ESC when you opened it up?

I was particularly partial to baby seal oil when I lived in Alaska....talk about soft skin!

Im curious, how do u circulate the baby oil on cooling the esc?

His set up was very basic. Allen half-filled the contaner with baby oil. It does NOT circulate thru the ESC only on the exterior. The silicon tubes coming in are for cnventional water cooling as well as the battery and motor wires.

                        Toasted a couple T180s before I added ext caps... now zero failure on 6S ( with bec ! ) DF33 CC1520
Alan's test in context with cap mod suggests conformal cap cooling may be the answer on standard T180.

                            Jeff.
Extra buffer of 900-1200uf fits the required spec @6s.
Higher can voltage than source = more tolerance to heating.
Contra to ^V is 30% larger can.

Thank you....2200 x50v. I like that setup, I guess you could have soldered them direct to the input lines. Was there a reason for the extra wire?
